Got the phone on release day from Sprint. It fell through my couch tonight and landed on the wood floor. Now, i have a hair line crack in the screen. Would anyone happen to know if getting the screen replaced locally would be more cost effective than paying my 150 deductible through Sprint?

Time to buy a case and screen protector.

I am about 90% sure it'll be cheaper to pay the deductible. One of the things I've seen over the years is new high end phones are ridiculously priced for repairs; esp when they're just launched, and that usually last for as long as it takes 3rd party suppliers to start selling the parts at a cheaper price.

So sorry that happened to you. My stomach kind of dropped for you while reading this. My son dropped mine earlier today and said "mah bad!" like it was nothing. I should've gotten my hands on his i5, dropped it and said the same thing. Fortunately for me it landed on a pile a clothes destined for the wash.

Best of luck. Please post how everything goes.

Yeah i didn't see it for about ten minutes after the fall. The crack is very faint. My heart sank. I'm visiting my mother and she felt terrible about it too. As did my girlfriend.

I'm thinking about getting the black tie lab from best buy and claiming it in a few weeks. We'll see.

Other than the crack is there any visible body damage?

if the crack is small enough maybe you can just toss a thick screen protector on and wait it out until the screens drop in price.

Definitely not trying to be a negative Nancy. I was reading in an S3 forum someone's phone cracked; his was due to heat. He said the crack is so faint it can barely be seen. It's under the screen so he has to hold it at a certain angle to for it to catch the light.

It got worse.

Something about those under the screen cracks are worse than a crack on top. I think the faster you get it replaced the better you'll feel; esp before it gets worse.

Good Info on the Heat possibly causing the the damage to the LCDs

Here's a teardown - LCD repair video to show whats involved

Galaxy Note 2 Disassembly & Assembly - Drop Test Repair - YouTube

And a site with step by step instructions here:

My own strategy for my Note 2 endurance will be -

* Otterbox Defender Case

* Pay attention to Temperature extremes - both high and low. I once had a laptop LCD screen get cracked when it was accidentally left overnight in a car in Chicago during a January snow storm. But leaving it in your car on a hot day can also cause damage - due to differing expansion / contraction rates of the different components under extreme shifts in temperature.

I think the deductible is $200 for the Note 2 and no, I do not want to join your club. I'd pay the deductible if I were you at least this early on you'll probably get a brand new phone as opposed to a refurb.

I realize that the gorilla glass isn't indestructible but I'm really disappointed that it broke so easily. I've dropped my EVO a dozen times and never had a problem.

For those ready to jump up and defend the merits of gorilla glass.....sit down; this ain't that kind of post.

IMO, gorilla glass brings the same fantasy as Apple. We all know it's not indestructible yet we hear it being so wonderful that we, as consumers, become devastated when something with gorilla glass breaks.

I dropped my Evo so many times it should've broke long ago. Even watched it slide underneath my car. Once I crawled from under it (couldn't find a kid) I was VERY surprised the screen didn't have one mark on it. BUT, it did shatter 5 min later when I dropped it on a hard tiled floor. :(

Maybe it's me, but I am of a firm mind that something over at Corning has changed because these gorilla glass screens used to be able to take a severe beating and tell their friends about it; now.....they don't make it out the ring.

It may be due to the way that the manufacturers are using Gorilla Glass 2, which is in most newer devices like the Note 2.

At the same thickness, Gorilla Glass 2 is stronger than the original Gorilla Glass. In order to make phones thinner & lighter, manufacturers are making the Gorilla Glass 2 panels thinner. This, in theory, causes the durability to be the same as the original Gorilla Glass.

Maybe the problem that we're experiencing is that they're making the panels too thin & it's allowing even less durability than expected.

There's also has to be a limit as to how big a sheet of glass can be before the structural integrity becomes irrelevant since the mass is so much greater the bigger these things get. Also the fact that these aren't closed structures like the iPhones or iPads makes the screen take more of the shock as opposed to the aluminum shell that covers the apple products. Rule number one is, don't drop this thing!

Absolutely!

Since the op wants to start a club, Ed started the rules. Here's the rest:

Rule number one is - don't drop this thing!
Rule number two is - DO NOT DROP THIS THING!

The otterbox makes the phone look like a vcr (tape).
Which might help cut down on theft if its left on the front seat of a car.

I realize the Otterbox Defender Case totally changes the appearance of the phone - but IMHO its a small price for the measure of protection provided.

IMHO - the worst choice for a case is one that leaves the Phone's corners exposed to contact during an accidental fall.

The Otterbox Defender series have protected my phones for years.

I won't get an Otter Box. Way too bulky, ruins the feel of a phone for me. I'd rather pay a few dollars more per month for a protection plan and get a more dimensionally friendly case.

I'd love one with the loop built into the back to slip a finger into. It would keep me from having to rest the phone on my pinky to use it one handed. I still haven't found one yet for the GN2 though.

Per Sprint, the deductible is $150, up from the $100 of my EVO because the phone is more expensive than the $549 retail threshold. I'm not shelling out another 50% of the purchase price a week afterwards when I'm already paying for the insurance.I'm canceling the Asurion plan and getting one through BB. Much better deal.
