Just got the phone yesterday. Here's dinner at Girl and the Goat, Stephanie Izard's (winner Top Chef season 4) restaurant. It's dark and at first, I didn't want to use the flash, but plenty of people do, so I switched it on.

Beet salad-no flash. still sharp, just dark. restaurant is pretty dark.

Overall, this camera puts my htc inc TO SHAME. Fast, sharp. Good enough for a phone cam. I also have a new 20 MP Sony P/S.

These look awesome. Whatever people do say, despite the quality compared to the iPhone, it is a huge step up from my original droid! I can't wait!

Thanks guys! Anyone else think it would be cool to turn this into a type of gallery thread? I love all the pics, and would love to share the ones I take!

Awesome.....it isn't.

In the photos posted above, in the available light shots (no flash) they're consistantly underexposed.

The flash shots, it's hard to tell as you can't really expect focus to work below a certain light level. Even expensive cameras don't always do that well.

As a pro photographer, I sure wish they had done a better job with the camera end of this phone. It doesn't have to be great....only as good as my HTC touch pro 2.

I agree that the camera is better than previous Moto phones, but it could still be better. My Droid Incredible 2 takes better pics. Shame that Moto doesn't improve the camera more to at least make it comparable to SG3, One X, and Optimus, etc.

Pics with plenty of light look good, but low lights settings are awful IMO. And sharpness is a little soft for my liking.

Like I said, better than before, but Moto still has room to improve. Hopefully Google will try to do something about it now that all the old Moto phones are out.

For a phone cam, I think it's fine. If you're that picky, carry a real camera.

a few from today; at some point the camera said to switch to hdr, so I did.

my old Razr from Verizon shot with my new one. I'm also "proud" to say I had the first Razr from Cingular on day 1.....for $500. Was I cool. Then they dropped the price a few weeks later probably to $199

Do you guys think it is a hardware or software issue with the camera? The reason I ask is that I'm wondering if the picture quality can be improved by a software update or 3rd party apps. This is the ONLY thing holding me back from getting this phone. The camera is a very important feature to me as my phone is the main source of my photos (iPhone camera is incredible, but I hate the OS).

Good question.... Here's a comparison between the stock camera app and ProCapture (the paid app I've been using)

Stock camera

ProCapture

Kinda liking the stock camera pic better.... If only it would leave the flash off like I tell it to I would just use it more. Every time I open it I have to manually turn flash off.

I agree Dmonac, the camera is the only thing holding me back right now. I've played around with this phone twice in the verizon store and I'm really impressed with it. The screen is awesome and that speaker blows away the S3 and also the iPhone 5, but I didn't have my headphones so I couldn't test the headphone jack's sound quality. The battery life and screen looks awwwesome. I'm basically waiting for Google's announcement on Monday to see if they're releasing the LG Nexus. I heard the Nexus it's based on the LG Optimus G, but some of those camera's reviews have been a little spotty too. Hmm.

Whats HDR? is that what we always should take pictures in? I just searched it but it was for a I-phone HDR. it said it takes three pics and combines the best features from the three photos? Is that correct? and if so does ours take three pics also?

HDR stands for high dynamic rage which can only be achieved by taking multiple shots and combining different parts to different pictures. For instance, where you'd normally lose shadow detail, the results would use the shadows in the over exposed photo. To that is added the highlight detail of the under exposed areas.

It's an interesting technique when you have a tripod and a subject that doesn't move such as a sunset. I don't see how it can be used with people, though.

They look good to me. If I want great professional photo's I'll use my actual camera.

They do look ok but we all know that its just a cell phone camera and it wont take pics that a real camera will take. With that being said I think everyone wants this phone's camera to at least be on par or better than S3 and iphone 5!

The frustration that a lot of people are having me myself included is that the camera or software is the same or haven't change much since the DX. Look at some of the pics above some are out of focus, dark, but some of them are beautiful. No I don't expect the RHD camera to be better than a professional camera but for a phone that was just released and on the level of the best phones out right now it should have a better camera.

I use my phone camera a lot and it's a convenient way to catch quick moments. I actually don't use my point in shoot because it is never with me but my phone always is. Using the S3 for a couple of months I can tell you that I 95% of the time took a excellent photo in any lighting with it. The RHD is about 50%! I could take the exact same pic 5 times and all of them will come out different. I think its really the focus and flash thats the problem and a revamp of the software could fix it.

Then you may try other camera apps like Camera 360 or Camera Zoom FX. I'm curious if RHD can get more consistent, better photo results with those apps than stock camera app.
