I'm about to turn 2 Triumphs into mini tablets for my kids. is there any way to completely disable the data/phone portion so it isn't leeching battery? I'll flash ROMs, no problem there.

I expect someone to chime in with a better way, but I do it with Battery Monitor Widget.

I use my Triumph as an expensive iPod Touch as I've let the mobile service expire. I just flip on airplane mode, then re-enable WIFI and that seems to work well. I'm running the MTDEV CM9 Rom which is quite nice. The battery life is a lot longer than on the stock rom that's for sure.

Settings, wireless & network settings, mobile networks, unckeck Data enabled. If you don't want them to make calls, in the same screen go to network preferences and chose Evdo only. That would shut down the phone dialing part and since you disabled data in the previous step, it will transform the phone into a tablet. Check if 911 calling still works, not sure if this will disable emergency calling or not.

That's cool... I always thought airplane mode disabled the wifi radio also. Learn something everyday.

It checks the wifi state and notes it. Then if you come out of airplane mode, it will re-enable it if it was on. If I read the code correctly, it should do it to bluetooth also.

Here is a good ROM everything works except data. The good thing is its on gingerbread 2.3.4 with working hdmi.

As others have said, turn on airplane mode to turn off all the phone's transceivers, then turn on WiFi while still in Airplane mode. I do that when I'm in a location where I have WiFi, but don't have cell service, so the phone doesn't eat battery trying to connect to a non-existent cell tower.
