Ok, from what i understood good TV is basically android based device with hardware similar to an average android phone and the Google TV app on top.

If that's the case can't we use our android phones with HDMI out and this app just like google TV?

I tried to download the app from the market but it said it's not compatible with my device, i guess it's limited for just google tv devices.

Is there a way around that?

i want to use the Google TV app on my phone, that's it.

Since it runs on android based device, why we can't run it on our phones, which are far more powerful anyway, and save the $99 :)

everything you can do on google tv you can already accomplish on almost all google phones.... not sure what it is you think a google tv can do that your phone can't:thinking::thinking:

i think this would work for i phones but i see one fatal flaw: it requires 3.1 or higher to run. i too, not being too sure what gtv has to offer different from my phone, would like to "run" gtv on my phone. yes i can do everything that the gtv can do already but sometimes its all about the presentation of information. now once we have cm9 this app should work. what version of android does gtv run? 3.1? 4.0? if it runs 3.1 were screwed with a port since honeycomb is closed source, but if its ics then its already in the works with cm9.

now off subject kinda. is there a way to turn my old optimus into a wireless keyboard-mouse-remote control for my esteem? ive been trying to do this for a while with no luck.

The Google TV Remote application works on most Android and iPhone devices and has the basic features that you'll recognize from your Google TV controller, including:

Channel Up and Channel Down
Page Up and Page Down
Play, Pause and Stop
Rewind and Fast Forward
Mute and Recall
Use the volume buttons on your phone to control TV volume.

mate we want to use the phone AS google tv, not remote control our google tv with the phone

That just pulls the functionality that you already have on your phone to your google TV... everything that app does your phone is already capable of doing:)

Is it really this difficult to answer someone's question without all the smug replies?

For those of you slow on the uptake, go to the Amazon Instant Video app on your phone. That's right, it's part of Google TV. It's not even available for a standard Android tablet like the Nexus (though it is available for Kindle). An Android phone DOES NOT have all the functionality of Google TV but many of the same apps are available in the Play Store which is probably why all the know-it-alls replied the way they did instead of providing an answer.

The question is about using the phone as the Google TV interface. It's not possible without getting into the Google TV development tools available in the Android SDK. If you got those kind of skills you'll find yourself very welcome at XDA Developers.

However, if you're simply interested in using your phone in a way that will be similar to Google TV install XBMC. Find the repositories 1Channel and some other addons and you'll have really a nice HTPC replacement using your Android phone. With a Bluetooth keyboard and $20 (possibly less but that's what it cost me) cable from Amazon, you will be as close to Google TV as you're going to get with your phone. This works quite well for me using a Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Check out the guide on MakeUseOf about using your phone as a desktop replacement.
