I tried rooting my S3, but can't get past step 12: You'll know you're in recover mode when it says "CWM-based Recovery" at the top of the screen. It said (I think) "system recovery <3e>". But I can't double check now, because when I hold Vol+, Home and Power, it vibrates, the Samsung logo flashes, and then it goes back blank. I've got Android Version 4.0.4, is this unrootable at this point? I can't find a list of what the latest update is and which ones have been cracked.

All versions of Android for the Sprint Galaxy S III are rootable. I've rooted on LEN (ICS), LG8 (ICS), and LJ7 (the latest - Jellybean).

What method did you use to root your phone? It shouldn't have taken 12 steps to root this phone. Follow this guide and you'll be rooted within 15 minutes: Samsung Galaxy S III - QbKing77.com

Also, when you hold Vol Up, Home, and Power, the Samsung logo will flash and then you immediately release as soon as you see the logo. If you keep holding it, it'll reboot.

Follow the link and then let us know what else happens.

Well, I used the link that was on the "All Things Root Guide", because I assumed, that hey, if it's stickied, it must be right. So you're saying that guide doesn't work, and I have to use a different one? How will the steps I've already done (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27751112&postcount=1) affect what you say is the "correct" way to root it?

*EDIT* And are there written down steps to follow? I don't do well with trying to watch a video, pause it, do what it says on the computer, then unpause it and try to watch my phone all at the same time.

The video is easier than the steps you've provided me. What I did was watched the video twice, downloaded all of the files he had in the description and put them on my desktop (mine only has the recycle bin so it's easy to find lol), then followed along.

Or you can head over to my Chainfire Auto root thread (it's still under the Sprint S3 forum) and do it that way.

OK so apparently I'm just really stupid, because the Chainfire Autoroot didn't work, either. I ran Odin like it said, and it said "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)" and it didn't reboot. So I ran it again, without the Auto Reboot option checked, and it went through a few steps, and is now sitting on "<ID:0/00g> Get PIT for mapping.." Nothing about it completing, and the .. at the end makes me wonder if it's still working on something. The Start and Reset buttons on Odin are greyed out, so I can't even try to start it again. I'm scared to turn off the phone cause I don't want to brick it, but what do I do? The phone is just sitting on the "Downloading ... Do not turn off target!!" screen.

I really didn't think this would be that difficult.

This happened to me when I rebooted. I didn't get a pass or anything. So I ran it again but I kept auto reboot unchecked. I turned off the phone and went to recovery instead of booting into the system and I had Clockworkmod. I didn't use Chain fires method but Qbking77's. I had rerooted on the official JB7 ota that was pushed to my phone if that matters.

No issues since then

april_fool... can you confirm or deny whether or not youve done the step by step process as laid out in qbking77's youtube video pls? youre kinda vague on what youve all done in odin. i.e. what files youve downloaded, how youve interacted with odin, whether or not youve installed all the proper drivers(which actually sounds like the issue here) etc etc... help us help you man!

++something totally unrelated and off topic++
