Siyah kernel - Dummies Guide

There is Siyah v 5.0 b2 available and not a single word in here? ;)

I think we're still waiting on a final yay or nay from Syd ! If it's a yay we'll be anxiously waiting to see what his SGSII makes of the newest Beta - FCs and crashes, huge battery drains for Syd, we'll be downloading it so fast we'll crash the server !

"SiyahKernel S2-v5.0i

Changelog:

Dual booting with new CM10 + Samsung ICS ROM
improved touch sensitivity
5-step GPU
added arm topology patches again, with cpupower driver.
merged with a JB leak (3.0.31)
removed dynamic cpu freq steps. they are all fixed now.
removed some settings from ExTweaks interface such as cfstweaks
orbot is now working (only tested on Samsung ROM)
Reboot into 1stROM, Reboot into 2ndROM in STweaks. (v5.0a2)
STweaks added to initramfs. it will be autoinstalled only once. it is my own implementation of uci.sh interface. There is almost no difference (except for resetting to defaults in the last tab) between ExTweaks and STweaks. It’s been used for some time in my S3 kernel and fairly stable. I wanted to put it in the last version of my S2 kernel as well. it is my second android app (first one is FastDormancy app).. it doesn’t have a fancy UI but not bad for a beginner .
BLNWW (BLN Without Wakelock).
Touch gestures optimizations (thanks to Tungstwenty for the latest changes and for this great feature).
added speaker and mic amplification/sensitivity settings which are based on fluxi’s mc1n2 interface, reversed and ported to uci.sh interface by dorimanx, tested and committed to my initramfs by robertobsc.
automatic led brightness level. touch voltage level will be ignored if this one is checked in STweaks
added B2G support (thanks to atilag@github for the initramfs changes).
added an option in STweaks to set a delay in FB earlysuspend to properly play CRT animation (implemented originally by Codeworkx).
reverted wifi driver to the one in cm10 kernel
fixed auto-brightness issue on CM10.
fixed some 2ndROM related problems in recovery when installing zips or restoring backups
fixed BLN intensity when auto led brightness is selected.
applied latest lulzactiveq tweaks from robertobsc.
mali and vsync related changes (mostly from Entropy512′s commits) which are supposed to improve the battery life
removed battery and performance profiles.
removed lots of cpu governors. available governors: pegasusq, ondemand, conservative, hotplug, lulzactiveq
new optional GPU frequency steps. enable VPLL Mode in STweaks but make sure you read the description.
fixed a CM10 specific problem with the new GPU steps but it still doesn’t guarantee that the new steps will be stable on your device.
added slide2wake (thanks to Fluxi) + some optimizations
added mdnie interface and made hardcore’s sharpness tweaks optional in STweaks
lulzactiveq fixes by robertobsc and added cpu governor selection back to stweaks
Finally fixed vpll problem and made it default (thanks to robertobsc for his helps on testing)

Just a quick review of Siyah v5.0i.

Very fast and smooth as you would expect from a developer of gokhanmoral's standard.

I cannot comment on battery life as I did not have it installed long enough, (Dorimanx has released his v7.10 kernel).

The kernel installs, "STweaks", app. This is almost identical to ExTweaks but, with Siyah v5.0i, a lot less tweaking options in either app.

Neither app allows for anything other than the Default profile which means that you have to tweak all the settings to mimic your favourite profile and, as far as I could tell, no options for Backup/Restore.

My feeling is that this is still, "Work in progress", and that a more polished version shouldn't be too long.

Hi guys,

New to the forum. This thread has been a helpful read, thanks!

I just rooted last night and all I've done so far is used Titanium Backup to remove all of the Samsung bloatware I don't need, but I will be trying out Siyah 4.1.4 this afternoon.
I shouldn't have any issues putting this on running stock 4.0.3 Rom should I? I'm taking baby steps.

Any other n00b suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hello and welcome to Android Forums jonaseymour! :)

Both Siyah 4.x and 5.x are compatible with Stock ICS ROM's.

Any other n00b suggestions are greatly appreciated.

There are a number of suggestions for things to do and app's to install for the newly rooted, shown in post #2 of Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide under the heading, "I'm rooted... now what?".

There are also useful tips and information in the sticky, "Samsung Galaxy S2 (International) - All Things Root Guide"

Also there is a range of, "Dummies Guides", on various aspects such as, modems, battery saving and kernels.

Personally, finding the latest siyah 5.0i offering fab. the scrolling and touch screen respond beautifully, and as you'd expect it's rock solid. now it's settled in, very impressed with battery life, less than 1%drain/hr, despite the lack of battery profiles. this remains the rolls royce of kernels to my mind.

have found the dorimanx kernels just not so smooth. obviously there is an awful lot more tweaking that can be done dorimanx kernel, but to be honest I can't be bothered with the endless tweaking and fiddling when gok has done it for you on his kernel (i sound like an iphone user).

and with gok now appearing to be hanging around to produce a JB kernel for S2, it's worth giving this one a try chaps

I constantly go back to Siyah 4.14 mate... Tried 5 but battery seemed to drain quickly during use... S4.14 gives me a 0% battery drain over 7 hours deep sleep

I'm not doubting your recommendation one bit my furry friend.... I'm absolutely delighted you have finally found something that works for you.... I've read your previous posts and man you have some bad luck with things ha ha

Glad you found your kernel

exactly why has gokhan taken out the profile switch option?

The profiles have been removed since after Siyah 4.1.5 if I remember correctly. I think this was possibly done whilst gok was in the testing phase in the recent releases and because he no longer has an SGSII full time and so therefore cannot monitor the profile effects. As to whether they will be replaced before gok finally calls it a day... who knows!

im still far too much of a noob to know how to set it up to "battery Performance" and so far ive found the latest to drain battery quite a bit more than usual

The drain is caused by all the settings being Default for the recent kernel releases for Siyah, (I wonder how many people, who did not read the Siyah changelogs, have been setting non-working profiles!), and so therefore it is up to each individual to set STweaks up to give them either Performance or Battery profiles if they do not like Default.

As for settings... I'm afraid that is up to the user and their needs. There is no such thing as the best settings... only the one's that give SOD's, FC's and freezes. They tell you that you have gone too far!

This link gives some battery settings that you can try. My advice is to start gently and work your way up.
