Hi taltool, I think it's worth the $4 to get the Swiftkey 3 keyboard. I'm coming from an iPhone and love it. It doesn't work exactly the same way, but the word prediction (especially after you've been using it) is amazing, and you can long-press many keys on the qwerty keyboard to get symbols. The delay for the long-press is adjustable, and I made mine short so I can get a symbol almost instantly then keep typing.

There is a free version you can try for a month, too!

Check out the case mate barely there. I think it's perfect. I thought the ultra thin air was very slippery.

1. Forget the stock keyboard. It is crap compared to what you can get. One example is Perfect Keyboard (the is a free version you can try). You can enable an iphone theme if you like that sort of thing. The reason you are having issues with the stock keyboard not returning to the alpha keyboard after punctuation input is because you don't have auto-snap back to alpha keyboard checked on (or the stock keyboard doesn't have this feature, I don't recall?) With Perfect Keyboard you have this and tons of other features. See my pic below for an example of how it looks. I have a Cyan theme going and my own custom punctuation at the top of the keyboard. This is on a Nexus7, but it is exactly the same on my S3.)

2. I can't remember how the stock phone is setup, but did you tap on you phone icon and then click on settings menu in the app itself? My phone hasn't been stock since June, so I can't check to see if the is something in that settings menu to either leave the phone app on after a call, return to homescreen, or lock screen after call? I've been running cm10 and AOKP ROM's, which have multiple options for what to do after a call ends. Sorry, wish I could help more.

I had the same issue with the keyboard. Just swipe right or touch the screen off the punctuation box.
