Release Time & Backup Question.

ok google wallet says that my order went through for the 8GB and I have an order number. *wipes forehead

Holy crap me too! Yay! 8gb for me (what I wanted anyways).

I also ordered my on the go cable for those times I need to plug my 8gb thumb drive in for those extra movies.

SWEET! I won't be too excited until it is in my hand, but at least I found my confirmation number and my chances of getting one is slightly higher.

The order system probably has some sort of threshold that shuts down the ordering process. If available inventory drops below a certain point or a certain number of orders are in queue to process it most likely is set to revert to the "coming soon" state.

I hear the frustration of everyone having problems, but since Google doesn't have brick and mortar stores, I can't think of a better way to do it.

really? a better way, i can think of a few...

they knew yesterday it would o on sale at 9:00am this morning. They gave no indication for that until exactly 3:00am last night. They could have at least released that info at midnight but waited until 3:00am just to tell people it will be available at noon then they had enough stock for less than 10 minutes of sales. I say 10 minutes because 95% of the orders over a course of 30 minutes got errors so the total confirmed orders equal less than 10 minutes of real orders.

how about actually e-mailing when the phone is available like it said on the product page that everyone signed up for. There;'s many better ways to have done it then what google just did.

i'm just frustrated ... on the bright side, that droid dna is looking better and better (i'm like a child that's easily distracted by shiny objects)

Being in IT, just the thought of handling 10% of the transactions they are being hit with makes my left eye twitch. Best buying experience and actually getting the system to work are very different things. I know how frustrating it can be ... and infuriating.

I'm imagining Google putting up a notice on Play that sales start at 9:00 a.m. and then at 8:55 sending out half a million emails saying "gentlemen, start your browsers." The switched and routers in the data center would be snapping like popcorn (and probably smell just as burnt.)

I think some kind of pre-order system has merit, but heaven forbid that the release be held up for either technical, logistical or legal reasons.

Maybe a better idea would have been to email everyone who signed up a link to a blind shopping site an hour or so prior to opening up sales to the public. At least then they'd know how much inventory they would need.

I'd love to see the statistics of how many units actually sold vs. how many were attempted to be added to a shopping cart.

I've had the same problems as many of you; I was "watching" for page changes every 30 seconds since 00:00 EST, using a simple Linux shell script (below)running in a terminal window. At about 11:30 my "LOUD DC-3" notification flew by in stereo, and I commenced to have endless store problems, multiple carts being emptied, error message of 4 different kinds, etc. ... many of you experienced the same thing.

The last error occurred some 45 minutes later, after I was able to select a shipping address and credit card, and pressed the button to finalize the purchase, which had the rotating blue cursor for a while before reporting another error and emptying the cart with no purchase confirmation. New attempts met with "Coming soon."

Some 15 minutes later I did check the store "orders and settings" and saw the order had completed, but had to check gmail several more times before receiving the purchase confirmation, so I guess persistence saved me. For all I know I may have purchased the last one in stock at the time.

For those of you with a Linux machine with "lynx" text-based browser and "aplay" audio command, below is a script that you can easily edit and run in a terminal. Just change the number of seconds to how often you want to check for N4 availability (default 30 mins.), the sound file you want played, and the email address you want the link sent to so you can then make the purchase from your current phone.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
URL="https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_4_16gb"
new="/tmp/new_nexus4"
old="/tmp/old_nexus4"
every="1800" #number of seconds between comparisons
noise=~/Music/DC-3_stereo.wav #my LOUD DC-3 flyby
address="me@example.com" #email address to notify with link

while true
do
echo getting source ... $(date)
lynx -dump -force_html "$URL" > $new 2>/dev/null
if [ ! -f "$old" ]; then
\cp "$new" "$old"
fi
echo checking for differences ...
if [ x"$(diff $new $old)" != x"" ]; then
aplay -q "$noise"
echo "$URL" | mail -s "Nexus 4 page changed" $address
echo -e "\n$URL has changed:"
diff $old $new
exit 0
fi
echo -e "sleeping $every seconds ...\n"
sleep "$every"
done

We had better get them in 2 days, after all thats what we paid for. I think it's just a general time frame estimate. I'm just relieved that mines went through. Just today my Galaxy Nexus battery decided it would stop charging, so I had to order a new battery off ebay. So my mom might have to hold off a few days before she takes my GNex off my hands. Hopefully it can hold its own until the 4 comes.

From the Google Play Help Center:

"All packages are delivered via UPS two-day shipping. However, please note that it may take up to 2 business days for us to process your order for shipment. Once your order has been shipped, you will receive an email notification with a UPS tracking number. Your estimated time of delivery will be determined at the point that your order has been processed and shipped. It may take 24 hours for the UPS package tracking to return any information for your tracking number. If you have not received a package tracking number after 2 business days have passed, please contact our support team via phone or via email."
