For the money, is there better than the Nexus 7?

Hi Esha77, and welcome to AF :)

I don't own one, so can only go on specs and other people's comments, but I'm not aware of any better android tablet for the money. The most comparable might be the Kindle Fire HD, but that's really locked-down to Amazon (and as there's nothing to stop you putting Kindle or Amazon Appstore apps on a Nexus, but you have to hack the Fire to put Google apps on it, that seems a clear win for the Nexus to me). So speaking personally, if I were going to buy a tablet today with that budget then the N7 would be my choice.

Welcome Esha77 :)

Have to agree with Hadron's reasoning, in that price range there is nothing that offers as much as the Nexus 7 and you can be sure for the next year or two you would be getting the latest updates as soon as they are ready... good piece of kit offered at that price as they can make the money back in the play store. Hoping Santa brings me a Nexus 10 for christmas, I've gave enough hints :D

Hi Wilkas,

I have to admit, I'm definitely swinging very much in the direction of the Nexus 7 now. It's just a question of deciding between the 16gb and the 32gb. Bearing in mind there's no expansion slot I'm tempted by the 32GB,
I hope santa is kind to you this year and brings you your Nexus 10 :)

My SIL has a Kindle HD, my brother a Transformer prime and I have a N7, We got to compare them over Thanksgiving and the overwhelming consensus was the N7 was clearly superior in usability and speed . My only caveat,is that I did have my screen crack (repaired under warranty by Asus). My brother also shattered his transformers screen, but that was after a drop and was covered by insurance. In the hand, the kindle felt a bit more robust than the N7, but the N7 has a more premium look and feel. Certainly without rooting and a rom replacement, if you're looking for full tablet functionality the Kindle isn't the way to go. Stock, it's strictly an Amazon provided content consumption device. On that note, since we are prime members I am considering getting a kindle HD for my wife. For me? No way!!!

The lack of expandable memory is what turned me off the Nexus 7. I got a Galaxy Tab 2 instead.

I also went with the GT 2 (student edition) due to expandable storage. Loved that thing but returned it the minute I heard all the US carriers were getting the Note 2.
For basic things like surfing, Facebook and Tapatalk...etc, it was quick. For the few games I played it was very sluggish.

Only game I've played on mine is Dead Trigger Zombies. It does well with that one.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for making me feel so welcome on this forum. You will probably be hearing a lot from me over the coming weeks and months after I get my shiny new Nexus 7 (32GB) Oh yea! I finally decided, thanks to so much encouraging feedback, it's the Nexus 7 for me! There will no doubt be teething troubles along the way, so I apologise in advance if I'm forever asking questions on these forum, but hey, isn't that what you guys are for? :D I'm relatively new when it comes to androids, but I dare say I will pick things up as I go along, and if I can help anyone in return along the way, I will do my best.

See you guys again after the unveiling!!

I'm not really bothered about the lack of expandable storage on the N7, although I was initially, but now I've decided to buy an OTG cable and Micro SD card reader, which, once I've downloaded the Nexus Media Importer from Play Store, will allow me the extra storage if I need it, apparently you can also use flash drives etc. as well. Also did you guys know, that you can use a PS3 or Xbox360 controller through the OTG cable to use on some of the games (obviously not all games will be compatable)
Yet to try any of this stuff out, but just thought Id'e pass on what I've been picking up along the way. Wow! can't wait to get my hands on that tablet. I've got a headache with all the excitment, and it's the only tablet that's going to cure it :D
