Folks, just managed to brick the un-brickable phone....aaaarg! Just being stooopid.

On boot, flashes ATT screen and stops. Power button doesn't do anything - only removing the battery will.

I can get it into download and tried flashing "Corn" ROM from Odin but it doesn't help.

I can get it into recovery mode and have "wiped data/factor reset" without success - just gives a bunch of "failed to..." and "Can't..." messages.

Tried OneClick with no success.

Anything else to flash using Odin?

Just gimme back my good ol' gingerbread....please!

Thanks for any help you might offer.

No biggie ... I know because as they say "been there, done that." What you have to do is take it all the way back to stock 2.1.1 (yeah, I know. I sighed so hard that I blew my coffee cup off my desk).

You'll need ... I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0. The link's in this thread (the mediafire link, megaupload is kaput) http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/162909-returning-stock.html.

Once you get it back to stock you'll need to update it through kies mini to 2.2 and then to 2.3. From there you can flash the corn kernel and get a working recovery. It's a pain, but it works.

Well, from bad-to-worse time.

The Odin window that popped up when I ran I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 didn't recognize my device. I check Odin3 and it didn't either.

The code that is generated when I use ""wiped data/factor reset" from recovery mode is as follows:

E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)

--Wiping data...
Formatting /data
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Formatting /dbdata...
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/stl10
Formatting /cache...
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/stl11
Data wipe complete.
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/log
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Cant open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:failed to mount /cache (invalid argument)

Doesn't look good. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Yes. I get the download screen and the pc knows something has attached to the USB but it doesn't show up in win explorer.

Apparently I've overwritten CWM recovery and the only thing running in recovery mode is Samsung Recovery Utils.

I've tried wiping data and cache a dozen times - all with the same outcome.

Is it time to see if this thing skips across the lake?

Just to be absolutely clear, this is the screen?

Have you installed kies mini? It will contain the appropriate drivers for the phone.

lunatic - you're a genius. I'm back to a working phone. I'll have to work back up to GB, but this is right on.

I do appreciate your help - I am grateful.

Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

I'm not a genius, I just screw up a lot of phones that I have to fix. ;)

If you want to root, you need to bring it up to 2.3.5 and that a two step process. First to FroYo then to GB.

Once you have updated to 2.3.5 then you can root with http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/493850-guide-rooting-adding-cwm-recovery-2-3-5-corn-kernel.html
