I really don't understand why I would want to get a ROM and IMO I believe they are just technically intimidating to me.

Could someone explain to me the importance of a ROM? I just enjoy being able to customize a computer from a shell environment, but at the same time, I don't want to be messing with files that were restricted from me for a reason. Moreover, files that I can't even fully understand myself yet.

I have just started learning Linux, so please correct me if I am wrong or don't make any sense :hmmmm:.

BTW: I am the proud owner of an HTC EVO Shift 4G, even for all its pitfalls

Well, the point of rooting is so that you can customize your phone the way you like it, if you are OK with the stock (OS your phone was shipped with), then yes, there isn't much point in rooting, but if you want to try out other things, themed ROMs, ROMs for higher versions of Android, then rooting is the only way to you can do that.
