Root Soooo slow

Across several different roms I can't figure out why my phone behaves so slowly (currently, on cm9, dolphin browser takes 15+ seconds to launch). Whenever I've flashed I've made sure to do the factory reset, cache partition wipe and dalvik wipe prior to installing the rom. What am I missing here?

I believe it's because our phone, on paper has 512 MB of RAM. But like everything on paper related to RAM, we have less than that. Overclocking didn't help me either. Like with a PC, upgrading the RAM is the easiest way to speed things up. Unfortunately, this is no easy task with a phone or tablet. In reality, my Triumph has about 380 MB of RAM. Our phone chokes on modern Android versions and modern apps. The slowness will always be there until one obtains a new phone, Unless you know how to solder in more RAM and have a background in engineering, there is no way to truly speed things up. However, I have found several workarounds to the slowness. Try using a low memory browser like Opera Mini. Tweak the performance settings in terms of memory to allow purging of assets and tweak the zRAM compression to the max. Also, this may be a placebo effect, or it may actually help. Try using Fast Reboot, and if you like it, get the pro version, and have it run every time the screen locks and unlocks. It has alleviated some of the pain for me, so far. Unfortunately, Chrome and Firefox are slow no matter what on this phone. Also, avoid multitasking. Sucks, I know. I wish there was an easy way to upgrade memory on a phone...

not sure even soldering on more ram would help it is likely that the device won't allow for more, though if you are having trouble, look at the running apps, if something is backgrounding that shouldn't be it could be eating up more ram and slowing everything down, if you are having that much trouble try looking at what is always running and close out some of the things that don't really need to be backgrounding, you can also change backgrounding rules to allow less apps to always be running and doing this could speed it up a little.

I have to ask, since this is happening across ROMs. Which recovery are you using? I suggest either CWM v5.0.2.7 or the new v6.0.?.? that b_randon is working on. I keep 5.0.2.7 on my good phone and haven't had any issues with 6.0.?.? from b_randon on my dev phone. Just a thought.

Also, are you restoring data with something like Titanium Backup or similar?

Those are the only things that come to mind when I read your post.

Edit: Just to put this out there, after working on the phone for so long, I have came to the point where I only factory reset between ROMs. Factory reset wipes data and cache, and dalvik cache is located in the cache partition. Then the ROM should wipe the system partition when you flash it.

I'm running 5.0.2.6 right now so I'll give the new one a whirl

While memory almost definately has something to do with your slowdown to crawl; there are other possibilities.

1. related to memory and/or cpu use.... a rouge app running in the background might pin either or causing the system to crawl. The next time you do a complete wipe add one app to the os at a time and surf the web. Add one browser at a time and I agree that Opera mini is fantastic right now on the Triumph. Next I would put Dolphin and then maybe try differnt updates of Firefox Beta. If you back up to Titianium backup or similar, and if you back up prior to installing an update, you can always roll back to an earlier version if an update doesn't cut it.

I install the System Tuner widget 1 x 1 and tweak the look of the widget to not show a central icon but shows....The CPU load, The processor speed and the amount of free memory. The widget uses some resources, but it has so many tweaks and can show so much information that it can only help in many situations. it also has a built in task killer. Many a blog has said that Android task killers (and rooting for that matter...lol) are no longer necessary.... I disagree and would recommend you try several, especially if you want to multitask or attempt to. My Triumph is never slow unless it's cable, wi-fi, signal related or do to too many running apps....I sometimes do a one touch fix with "Memory Booster Lite" using the default quick boost and or app killer. It takes less than a second to boost the available ram and the results are immediate...and I've never had a total crash or reboot in months.

2. It is also possible that you have an incredibly slow or defective micro sd card. If you put many of your apps on your micro sd card and it's some of the problem, then try replacing it. We have around one gig of built in memory but maxing it with tons of apps can also be a drag on the rest of the system.

Ive tried many of the Roms for the Triumph, and being slow was never an issue. I am sure that whenever I replace it or change providers, it will be for a phone with 2GB of Ram if possible and certainly a micro sd or similar slot. I hope at least some of this helps, I am not an expert in this field but do have the ability to follow directions and problem solve...lol....Good luck!

One more thang....After you install a new rom and reboot, be patient and don't touch the phone for 2 minutes after your first boot to give all aspects of the phone a chance to fully load. A reboot doing the same doesn't hurt either (and on some roms is a necessity for everything to work right).

That new CWM Recovery is quite a piece of work! And in a good way! Although it initially caused my phone to crash when backing up in the dup format, this has been fixed in the latest release. So as far as I can tell, it is quite a worthy upgrade. Just be careful if you are wiping. I wouldn't recommend manually wiping any partitions. For example, formatting MOBILE has bricked some phones. Just factory reset between upgrades. Also, it looks more modern and has a holoish feel to it.
