Help Connect via WIFI problems

Ever since I got my Hero I've had serious problems surfing the web via wifi with the built in browser and any other available browser as well. It worked with 3G and non-browser applications could access the net, podcast applications, Connectbot, market etc worked with Wifi.

The other week I glanced at my 3G APN settings (yes, in the phone!) and saw that it had a http proxy setting there (i.e. many mobile operators provide a proxy service for mobile surfing to speed things up). I thought, "WTF!, what if that stupid setting still is in effect when I browse the web via wifi?".

Well guys, I removed the two proxy settings (proxy host name and the proxy port (8080)) and voila! The problem is gone!

Since I did it I've never had this stupid problem. It is a bug that should be fixed but at least this could be a pretty good workaround!

Now, this could explain a lot of things in this thread, for example why it works for some and not for others.

So If you are having exactly this problem (i.e. you can't surf the web when connected only to wifi but other applications are available, market, connectbot, whatever that is not port-80 or proxy dependent) Take a glance at your APN settings of your 3G connection. Write the proxy settings down and try removing them!

Please post back if you succeed with this or not and if you indeed have a proxy setting there in the APN settings.

My mobile operator here in sweden is teliasonera and I have a dlink-DIR 855 router (european version).

Regards, Da9l.

How do we get to the 3G APN settings? Had a look under "wireless controls" and can't see anything like you describe...

Ok, I have a 3G Hero bought in sweden with nordic rom, setup might differ but I'm not sure. Any "quoted" menu stage below is my translation from the swedish menu name.

So, I go: Menu->Settings->Wireless Controls->"Settings for mobile network" (second last option on my phone)->"Access Point Name" (name of your operator should be specified below)

Here I open the active "APN" and get the screen for "Edit Accesspoint".

I delete the values in the entries for Proxy and Port.

Don't forget to write your proxy and port settings down if you need to revert those settings.

Be careful editing these settings since you might loose your 3G connection.

Hi guys.
Don't have a problem surfing with wi-fi but I do find problems actually scanning to pick up a wi-fi unless I'm almost on top of the router. Not just finding this on my own router, but virtually everywhere I try to connect to one.

Running a stock HTC Hero, firmware 1.5, software 1.0.0.A6288, kernel 2.73.61.66
Using an Orange Livebox router with no problems other than when using the Hero

Seems to me that the Hero has a very poor signal for wi-fi as unless I am very close to the router, it doesn't see it. From the lounge to the hallway it can't see it, when a Nokia and a Samsung both have good signal strength on wi-fi.

Does anyone else have problems like this?

I think the Hero is definitely picky, as I stay connected to my own AP even at the other end of the building with two walls and fire doors in between. Mine even detects AP signals that are too weak to connect to, which is annoying when you're looking for a quick 'net fix on the cheap! :)

My HTC Hero does connect to my Zoom X6's wifi, but only as a result of the router being rebooted. The connection is good for a max of 10minutes.

Using a wifi signal meter I've discovered that 10 minutes after being rebooted the Zoom X6's wifi transmissions switches on and off intermittently - 15 seconds on and 25+ seconds. It's no wonder that the smartphone is unable to connect reliably.

Just emailed Zoom Support for their comments.

Hi All. I have been reading all the plethora of similar HTC Hero WiFi problems with interest.
Strangely enough, I am another person having problems.
I actually have the T-mobile version (G2-Touch).
When I first got it, it worked perfectly on WiFi (whilst awaiting the T-mobile account completion for service to be available).
I have a Netgear WPN824v2. I can confirm that everything else in the house connects perfectly to this including 4 laptops; on simple WAP 128b (I have to use WAP for the kids Nintendo DS's to connect)
Since my 3G account became fully operative, my WiFi got killed off (coincidence?)
The Hero continues to work Works a treat on 3G but very iffy and rarely on WiFi
I tried changing my router from auto 108Mb to just b/g and the wifi strated working very briefly (perhaps a minute) and then refused again.
Tonight I tried to assign a specific IP to my device by MAC address. I gave it 192.168.1.10
This worked for about 2 minutes and I managed to access Loot and Yahoo but then it stopped again.
It seems in fact that messing and saving any changes to the router appears to kick start the proper connection and then it hangs again. I assume this actually includes a router reset to its connected devices?
I can also confirm, the Hero connects and confirms an excellent connection at 54Mb yet it will not allow browsing. It appears to fetch weather updates.

You know; it is all very well messing with the routers or even replacing them (as many appear to have done) but the whole idea is that the phone should connect with available WiFi networks. This does not seem to be such a problem for other manufacturers of devices. So many of you are blaming 802.11 protocols and certain routers, yet those same devices connect to just about everything else.

Face it, it's the Hero that has the problem!

I may just try to load up the latest ROM release and see if it helps any (sigh, back-up and restore :()

One other observation should it mean anything significant to anyone: My router can store devices by MAC address (as can most I believe) to deny access to unlitsed MAC's.
When I added the Hero's MAC, I gave it a name as I have done for all my devices.
The Hero loses its name when revisiting or refreshing the stored list - it just shows the MAC address with a dash in the 'device name' box.
Confused - ABSOLUTELY

Two changes i made that cured most of my wifi problems at home (with a Linksys WRT54G running Tomato), using WPA2/PSK/AES:

- enabled SSID broadcast (which I had disabled)

- use combined B+G mode.

The latter is odd: I have *no* B-only clients, so had wanted to use G-only mode. But if I do that, the Hero often seems to have problems connecting. In mixed B+G mode, it's fine.

My Netgear is sending SSID and is running b&g only (in preference of auto 108Mb/s). No change.
I am still angry that the Hero's are unable to do what everything else I own can achieve with ease. Even the Xbox connects without a fuss.

I just got a reply back from HTC who has totally missed the point (despite the pointer to this thread)
quote:
Dear David, Thank you for your email. This is quite a common issue that you are having, it also has quite a simple way to fix it. 99% of people with this issue it turns out that it is not an issue with the phone. If you log on to your router through your pc then you change the settings on the router. There are 3 speed settings on your router, N, G and B. Our HTC devices are not made to work with G and B settings only. So just change the setting to one of those then your Hero will connect no problem. If there is anything else please do not hesitate to get in contact again. Kind regards HTC Technical Support Team.

They are clearly deluding themselves.
If everyone on here could similtaneously bombard their support by raising a ticket, perhaps they'd figure that people are getting really p!ssed off!

Hello,

I just wanted to say that I also had these problems with HTC Hero's browser hanging when on my wifi network at home. I have a Thomson TG784 router. Restarting the Hero have helped before but only for a while and then it hung again.

Reading this thread for ideas I found someone changing the channel of the home network (from 1 to 3).

I did try this change last night and it seems to work so far! My Hero browser works as expected! Only one occurrence of the infamous "1 cm progess bar" hang and it was resolved by a simple repeated load attempt.

I don't know exactly why this helps. I could see - however - that channel 1 was busy with other traffic so perhaps the browser is over sensitive to competing networks... Sounds strange though...

I'm finding now (and possibly always) that when I get the 1cm progress bar hang, that if I go and turn off wifi (on my Hero) and then re-enable it a few seconds later, it speeds up and the 1cm thing goes away.

It's as if the Hero thinks it's connected, but it's not connected properly, and it needs re-connecting to get it sorted.

OK. I got another response from HTC. I'll save you the boredom of reading through it but in short it recommended I reset back to factory settings (deleting all phone settings and data).
GREAT I thought, having got it just how I wanted it at last.
But I did it and having finally restored everything back, the wifi works perfectly (and v fast too)
So, from this it is clear there is a software bug of some sort and something at some stage triggers it. Perhaps if someone else who has this data transfer issue can try the reset too to see if it isn't just my phone?
Come on you techies, if this is a fix, then the solution can't be too difficult?
Perhaps when Android 2.1 hits, the issue will be gone?
Now I am just hoping I'm not going to be returning on here tomorrow bitching again

UPDATE: 3 days later: WiFi still perfect (range isn't as good as a laptop though). Still can't fathom what I have set up differently that caused the problem first time round. Frustration.

UPDATE: now 16th April. Still absolutely OK

UPDATE: now 26th May.It is still A1. I would strongly recommend any people having trouble, commit to a reset to factory settings and start again. It costs little to try and if you've bothered to use sync with googlemail then you'll not lose your contacts either.

I have a NETGEAR DGN1000 and having all the same problems as listed. Tried most of the things I feel capable of doing without breaking my kit and no joy.......
Is there any way of wiring for an internet connection?? I have powerline adapters and could do it relatively easily if theres a way.
By the way, the Wii wont connect to the router either!!

Hello,

I recently bought a HTC Desire and also had a WIFI problem. I could not find any specific topics on HTC Desire and WIFI problems. In the end I stumbled upon this thread.

Previously I learnt how to solve a similar for the Wii. This thread taught me how to access advanced WIFI settings on my HTC Desire. By changing the DNS settings on my HTC device I could solve the problem!:)

The solution is very simple: change the DNS on your HTC device to the IP address of your wireless router. This does not make much sense, but it works very well in my case.

This should work when you already can connect your HTC to the wireless router (i.e. your HTC device successfully receives an ip address from the router), but you do not get a response when you enter an URL in the standard browser. A lot of people posting to this thread seem to have this problem, though there also some people who cannot connect their device to the wireless router at all.

Could some people try this out if it works in their case?

Gday all,

I'm having very similar problems with my HTC Desire. I can connect to wifi networks but not be able to surf the net or used any net based applications (including android market). i've found that there is a massive thread on google's android issues forum about this - just google "android issue 1273" and it's all there. seems to be a proxy settings issue and after talking to my universities IT department they're aware of the problem as well, but no solutions.

it seems like this has been a problem throughout the android line. it simply won't do it when it comes straight out of the box (unlike fruit-manufactured mobile phones). i think u can get it to work for rooted phones but i dont have the knowledge to maintain a rooted anrdoid phone. have seen some solutions that apparently work for android phones pre 2.0 but nothing for 2.1/eclair phones anyone know of any solutions. my IT department hinted at possible third party applications that could solve this issue, anyone know of any?

on a side note i would love to know how this issue has not cropped up at all on mainstream media or even internet blogs. not once when researching for a new phone did this issue come up in reviews.

Hi there, I've had some similar issues to what others are reporting here with my HTC Hero (stock android 1.5, European GSM version).

My phone would loose connection to the Wifi network pretty often and I would also have the "1 cm brower progress bar" issue where pages don't load at all in the browser.

I fiddled with my router (an ASUS WL-500Gp running OpenWrt) settings for a couple of days and finally found some settings that allows me to connect from anywhere in my apartment and I no longer have connectivity issues.

I wrote a small post on it on my personal blog with the technical details: blog.jir.dk HTC Hero and Wifi Connectivity Issues

Presume you are a fellow Aussie, I totally agree with you. I bought my HTC Hero after reading PCAuthority and because I never wanted to buy anything from Apple.

Being not tech savvy I am lost and now regret my purchase. I can connect to my router (Netgear) but not browsing or email, which defeated the purpose of buying it. People I know could use their iPhone for these things out of the box. May be I should have stayed on with Nokia.:(
