Best buy = oxymoronic

Call me old fashioned but sometimes I like to hold a product in hand. Also, I'd rather return or exchange in person. And then there's the time where I want/need something now. I'm more than willing to pay more to bring it home and be back in business in a matter of minutes.

I buy a lot of stuff through Amazon et al. but I think it'd be a shame to lose Best Buy. I felt the same way about Circuit City going under. Losing brick and mortars is a bad future imo.

I agree 100%. Unfortunately, a large b&m operation can't exist as a place to touch and feel before purchasing online. The hope that once the big boxes that crushed the little independent retailers get crushed by the on line guys, there may be a place for some of those smaller operations to return. If there's a need for a place that gives service and instant gratification at a price, someone will provide it.

buy from newegg or tigerdirect. usually cheaper and more convenient.

i can usually find cheaper on the internet but im one of those people that dont like to wait for things... i would rather spend more money and take it home tonight then spend $20 less and have to wait even a week... and i cant see spending alot of money on shipping because then you might as well just went to the store and get it that way :)

i was just going to say exactly what you just said. there is just something about going into best buy and get to see the product and get a feel for the product.

i too was sad to see circuit city go...though they are still have their online store>>>>though looks like tigercity has taken over:(

I enjoy shopping at Best Buy but just like Radio Shack unless you get it on sale you're probably paying too much. I guess I'm lucky because my local will price match just about anything. Amazon doesn't just win on price point, by limiting their physical presence most people can buy tax free and returns are ridiculously easy, just print out the mailing label and tell them when it's convenient for you and they schedule UPS to pick it up at your door. One thing that no one else can beat though is the BB black tie warranty, you get 2 defective devices in a row and your entire purchase price is applied to a different one. And Tiger Direct does own the Circuit City name for online presence, same thing as another one of my favorite stores to go under, CompUSA.

Dateline 2016: Service economy expands due to collapse of Main Street retailing. Manufacturers face bankruptcy due to the rise of forum shilling as job category to astroturf products given that consumers can no longer properly comparison shop. Unemployed consumers fall prey to congressional lobbyists pushing for seller protection laws to replace consumer protection. Ironically, the new laws pass under the same name. As happened long ago in the HDTV and home audio industries, technical quality and technology-based innovations become a thing of the past for personal digital products.

Dateline: 2014: Apple has sued every phone manufacturer out of business and now everyone has been assimilated, the only difference between devices is the now standard 4" screen for the iPhone. The 7.9" screen for the iPad mini and iPad with retina 9.7" display. No customization, and everyone blinks in unison.

As stated earlier I don't have an the option to check out the brick and morter stores. Most are to far away from me and really its just easier to shop from home. If those stores are to compete then they will need to build their stores in the more remote places such as where I live. The consumer base that they are ignoring is what has been captured by the online stores. Over pricing is another issue that these stores will have to deal with as the local Block Buster was shutdown do to the fact that netflix and redbox made it so much cheaper to rent movies than Block Buster did. low over head is what is going to crush the B&M stores.

When Amazon can't use retailers as their free showrooms, things will change, and it won't be better.

I am reminded of a mail order firm called Sears, Roebuck & Company but I'm probably wrong.

That is one possibility. Perhaps we will finally have those Google Goggles and we will not need stores.

I remember when Christmas arrived, so did the catalogs. Sears, J.C. Penny and a few others. All that cool stuff you could order by mail rather than be disappointed when you visited Sears and the thing you wanted was mail-order only.

Just like today perhaps.

The former CEO was just listed as one of the worst.
Worst CEO of 2012: Best Buy

Geek Squad does have a terrible reputation

One of our locals also discourages helpful employees. The department head was annoyed since an employee demo'ed a microwave for us. I didn't want one that reminded you there was food in it and beeped every minute. The MW in question didn't keep beeping and we bought it. Told the idiot manager that offices usually will NOT buy MW with continuous beeps as the person who used it can't always get right back to it.

We have a new mall here in SLC. It was created from the bones of two other malls sitting across the street from each other. This mega mall takes up two blocks and people seem to love it. Water was diverted from a local creek through the mall. That cost a pretty penny or three. It is stocked with little fish I am told.

Not sure if the Tiffany store and the large Rolex watch and Porsche Design stores are doing that well.

Thing is, these are high-ticket luxury items. Part of the luxury experience is going to the boutiques, getting pampered and treated like royalty. Somewhat different to buying a budget Android tablet from Best Buy or whatever.

Anyway I don't think anyone in his or her right mind would contemplate buying a Rolex watch from an internet vendor.

If a mall luxury store is not doing too well, could be because it's in the wrong place, people are too poor. Rolex, Tiffany, LV, Cartier, et-al always seem to do well in Beijing.

I only go to Best Buy because i can't stand Wal-Mart. any store smaller than Wal-Mart (and surprisingly, Best Buy here in Owensboro, KY is quite small, even smaller than Staples, using old space from an old store that used to belong to the much larger MegaMarket, now turned outlet mall) is a store i prefer to go into. i can't stand huge big box stores--i won't even shop Kroger, i only go to far out IGA stores using old Wetzel's facades from the 1970s and earlier.

i never did like shopping online outside of app store purchases. i have to have a reason to get out of the house other than work, otherwise i'd turn sendentary really quick and that is not a life i prefer to adapt to, think Buy n Large from the film 'Wall-E' if you know what i mean.

I used to be an avid Best Buy customer, remember that Amazon and other online retailers weren't always reliable.

10 years ago or so Best Buy actually had great sales and competitive pricing then would make their profits on 'add-ons'. People lined up outside on Sundays as their first sale day of the week.

Then I read an article about Best Buy's theory on 'Devils vs Angels'.

They saw Angels as the early tech adaptors that will pay anything to be first on the block; we all know one of these peeps. Devils were the customers that bought the sale items and not much else. Of course they wanted to limit the 'Devils'.

I was in the middle of the two but I saw it as hypocrosy to heavily advertise sales then not want to issue the items. Left a bad taste in me.
