Root [Verizon] Synergy Jelly Bean

the restore process is very cpu intensive...your phone is also syncing all of your data from servers and such since you did a data wipe...plus the included ziggy kernel defaults to 1900mhz on first boot...so youre running your cpu balls out at 50% higher clock speed...you could literally be overheating the phone...

Even after finally getting it to stay cool long enough to restore all my apps it keeps over heating.

I'm going to see if I can understand the process of returning to the stock unrooted ROM. Then see if it continues to overheat, if so take into Verizon and make a warranty claim. Then upgrade to the stock Jelly Bean, because at this point I can't see any advantages to custom JB ROM's over stock. It after upgrading to the stock JB ROM it starts overheating I'll take it back to Verizon.

what youre experiencing is not typical...ive never experienced it on ANY of the TWJB ROM's ive run

You are not the only one to tell me this, so I hope Verizon doesn't give me a bunch of B.S. when I return the phone on a warranty claim, because I suspect it is a hardware issue.

I'll likely be pushing it, but I'm going to see if they will give me a white one this time. Fat chance I'm sure.:smokingsomb:

By the way after 2 attempts I am finally successful at returning it to stock and now have the stock JB ROM from Verizon after doing several updates.

So now I have a couple questions. At this point I can see the point in rooting JB as then, if I understand correctly, I can us Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware.

Nevertheless, I would like to know being a objective as possible is there currently any practical advantage to flashing any of the current JB custom ROM's over the official release?

I'm even debating a little about rooting from a security point of view, because I use my phone for business and keep sensitive information on it and think it might be a good idea to encrypt the phone.

there are some advantages...my phone on SynergyJB is significantly quicker at doing certain things than my friend that is on stock rooted JB....the one that stood out most to him that he noticed right away was unlocking the phone...

he noticed my phone transitions from lockscreen to homescreen much quicker and smoother than his does...

there are some additional features to things like the messaging app and the camera app that ROM devs bake in...those can be added separately as MODs if you really want to search for how to do them though...

frankly if we are being completely honest with ourselves the "craze" around custom ROMs is rather psychological...we convince ourselves that custom is infinitely better than stock when its generally not a significant improvement that would be noticed by an average user...

does my phone run better on Synergy than stock? yes, absolutely..no question about it...but does it make it a brand new phone? no of course not
Is the white one faster?

of course it is...its an iPhone

I just got off the phone with Verizon and they are replacing my phone for free! I decided to to not push the issue, by asking for a white one. LOL!

they offered to replace mine for free also when i had data issues (from a 4.2 rom)

i decided not to do it, since they would want me to mail back my original pgone and see it was unlocked/rooted

any concern on your end?

can anyone clarify how Synery is different from stock JB?

Best bet is to go here...and read the whole first post...concentrate on the change logs (both JB and ICS, because all of the ICS mods made it into JB as well)...also...in the ICS change log...make sure to follow the link to the nightly log...after ICS build 1.7 Synergy went to a nightly status where it was updated nightly for awhile...

A lot of it is under the hood so to speak and might be over your head...but you will get an idea of what is different

I have returned the phone to the unrooted stock rom, so I wouldn't expect any issues.

Though I hate not having it rooted now, because I have a bunch of things backed up with TB that I need access to, for some reason not even all of my contacts were backed up to Backup Assistant so I'm missing some of my important contacts.

I hate to root it just to have the back ups and then have to unroot it again, before sending back to Verizon. However, I may have to anyway.

I loaded r155 today and had some issues. First, I did a TB backup, then did a backup with ROM Manager. Then I wiped everything and loaded r147, then loaded r155 right away. According to the instructions, r155 needs to be a "dirty" install...meaning no wipes after the r147 load. What I didn't realize at the time was that I needed to load r147, boot up and setup like normal, THEN go back to Recovery to load r155. Well, after 10 mins of waiting for the initial r155 boot up to finish (never left the boot animation), I wiped everything again and loaded both properly. I rebooted and saw the apps upgrading in the ROM. Once done I started going through the settings. The phone started getting really hot to the touch. After 10-15 mins, the phone went blank. I had to take out the battery to cool it off, then rebooted. Same thing after 10-15 mins, the phone went blank. I have been using CleanROM 5.x up to now with no issues. So it must be some setting in the Synergy ROM that is causing the overheating. I reverted back to using CleanROM until the issue is addressed. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue.
