[International / GSM] 1/03/2013 [Maguro] AOKP 4.2.1 MR1 Build 1

Jelly Bean 4.1.2 AOKP Build 5 is up folks!

  • NavBar widgets are back from ICS
  • Highly customizable Lockscreen Ring targets, with a shiny new editor in ROMControl! (also thanks to CM for the base of the framework part)
  • Alternate default app picker (like in GB)
  • Menu UI Overflow Toggle
  • Option to disable vibration for Notification expansion
  • RAM Bar in the Recents panel
  • Timeout and instant lock options for Slide lock
  • VPN Traffic amount in human readable format

New gapps also linked in OP.

If you are a flashoholic and not coming straight from Build 4 (you built it from source, or tried some unofficial/nightly builds), you might have to reset your Lockscreen targets, as some critical code has been changed over the last few days.

Adam has created a new app for us to update and track new AOKP releases, and also the ability to snag the latest gapps package. Check out Kangerator from the Play Store!

I am currently on AOKP JB 4.1.2 Build 5. Is it possible to make it a simple update or do I have to clear my data again? Any big changes between the two builds?

Thanks in advance ;)

Yes, you can get away with dirty flashing Milestone 1. Just remember to do your nand backup, and go back and do a clean flash if the dirty flash produces wonky results. :)

That majority of the changes in Milestone 1 are all of the bug fixes. The team managed to clear the bug fix lists this go round (w00t!). Personally it feels like it runs a lot smoother this time, but I think it's due to them switching to leankernel (ooo thanks for reminding me... I forgot to add that in the op!).

If memory serves correctly, they reason for the kernel switch is due to Fauxs dev being sick and not able to update the kernel right now, so they may switch back at a later date.

On that subject of kernels. What should I over clock to and which governor should I use to speed it up just a bit. I play a lot of gta on my phone.

Well if you want to set the governor and CPU setting for just when you fire up a game, there's nothing wrong with maxing it out and throwing it on performance mode. Keep in mind that your battery will drop like a rock but the phone will be as smooth as it can be. Im sure you could get away with 1500-1600ish and having the gov set Ondemand or interactive and possibly get the same results but if your gonna do it, might as well go all out.

Now I wouldn't have these settings for daily use, just for gaming use. I generally underclock for daily use as the phone still stays smooth and lag free around 900/500ish.

Hope this helps :D

Another thing to keep in mind is; what OC settings one G-Nex uses may not work on another G-Nex. I've found that it's best to begin with low OC settings and run that way for a day or two. If you get no random reboots, turn it up a notch. Rinse and repeat till you get a random reboot, then bump it one notch down. That should be the highest you can go without random reboots.

Where can I underclock my phone and how much extra battery life can I get?

EDIT:
NVM found it in AOKP settings. Got another question though - back in the stock JB I was able to set a vibration on for notifications while having my phone set to vibrate - I can not find it in settings after switching to AOKP. Am I just blind or is it missing? If it's missing is there any way (modifying some configurations file or sth)?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

EDIT2:
Alright, found it as well. It was hidden in SMS app settings, not in the overall settings :D

I swore that I wouldn't run 4.2 because of the UI changes that I didn't like but I have flashed it and started to put in the work.

I went in and fixed the pull down menu "On-Off" bar that lights up when you go to close. I don't know why they changed that but it's just hideous now. Yeah it's small and stupid but little things like that is what made Jelly Bean amazing. So I changed it back to the thin blue line with transparent background.

I also changed the clock font back to the regular JB clock font. I just don't get the concept of their new clock font with the BOLD hour and standard minutes and then changing the actual font all together. I prefer the old font. :D

I also found a weather app that could suffice in the lack of the stock weather that's missing in 4.2. I'm using Eye in the sky that has an ongoing notification that is very clean and holo-ish. It also displays a matching holo blue temp in the status bar. It takes priority over everything else so the ongoing noti always stays at the top and the temp noti always stays on the left.

I also took away those lines that show up when you first wake your phone. The lines that show you that you can swipe left or right for the lock screen widgets. I don't need those ugly ass lines to tell me.

I'm still working on some other things but I've got 4.2.1 suitable to my liking and I am really enjoying thus far. if anyone cares about or would want any of the changes I mentioned, i would be more than happy to send over my systemui.apk or framework-ui.apk. :D
