Hello, i am a new member ! I have 2 hp touchpads (32g) and i would like to install the android latest and most stable for both, i have read all the instructions you guys posted for that, but i prefer that somebody with experience doing this install it for me, also i have a cheap internet service, i live in Orlando FL if somebody from the area can help me with that, you could contact me here - about this. Thank you.

Hello. I am new here. Not new to Android though. I've rooted a few Nook Colors, and have also rooted a few phones before. :captain:

I'm going to acquire an HP Touchpad. I recognize it comes with WebOS, but I don't see myself using that... but am not sure. Do I want to keep WebOS on the device and have dual boot capability? Pros/Cons?

Do I need to do something special to make it so the device can be restored prior to resale if i ever do that?

I presume I should load the most recent version of CM10 on the device. Any known issues / gotchas I should concern myself with?

Will I still be able to sideload Android content?

Do I have to be careful w.r.t. deeply discharging the battery and bricking the unit?

Any pointers appreciated.
Thanks. S.

You can't get rid of WebOS. But you can side load android. CM10 runs fine.

colchiro, you wrote: "Make sure it's the 32 gb version if you plan to keep any media on it (videos, music, pics) or you'll run out of space."

First, thank you so much for responding to my inquiry.

Actually the TP is a 16GB version (all I could afford at the moment); the media I keep is generally on my phone running ICS, with the filesystem that allows me to park applications on the microSD card... so I'm good there, but even still, I haven't gotten close to running out of space

Can you clarify what you meant by your comment?

I wasn't really upgrading from a NC - those were genned for my kids; they took one and dropped it and the ex-wife hid the other and lost it. :fight:

So, this device is for me. :smokingsomb:

Hopefully the video playback is decent and BT operates as it should. I like using TuneIn and Pandora - this would be mainly used as a browser, newsreader, Netflix, and streaming audio device... maybe, just maybe I'd let the kids check email using it.

colchiro: I understand, yeah, it's a vision thing as I get older. I stare at two large Dell monitors each day, and sometimes using the phone's display is just too tough at the end of the day.

So I need something a bit more comfortable than a 7" display. While the LG Spectrum I have has a 16GB card in it (has several movies and a lot of music and pictures) it has plenty of space left on it. Hopefully, if CM10 is responsive, the user experience will satisfy me for a few years at least.

As for shutting down the unit before the battery level drops, is it really possible to permanently brick a unit that way, or can you put it on a charger for a few days and get it to boot back up? If so, I will surely install that program!

Text/icons on my TP are too large for me (and I bet I'm as old as you :D) so you should be good. The speed is pretty good, almost as fast as my Nexus 7, purchased last summer.

RE: bricking. Bricking means permanent damage due to user error, and is a term often misused. My wife has run her TP dead a couple times with no problem and most users won't. However a few unlucky people have run into issues, but were able to bring their device around by the procedure here: TPDebrick v004 - HP Touchpad - RootzWiki Last I heard about 30 people had revived their tablets from that link.

I purchased two TP's, supposedly bricked. One powered up after 20 minutes of charging and is working great with CM10 on it now. The other one is unresponsive so I will be using the instructions on that link to bring it around. Both tablets were purchased from fleeBay for about $75. If you power it off when finished and install the latest CM10 with the shutdown fix, I'd think you'd be good. Then just try to power it up once a month or so and you should be good. My TP never gets below 50%.

+1 CM10. Install it via the Acme3 installer using Roland's excellent guide: How to install jcsullins CM10 Unofficial Build 20121216, with Sound, Camera & Microphone, Updated 2/3/2013 - HP Touchpad - RootzWiki

The latest nightly has code to shut it down at 3% to prevent it bricking.

Make sure it's the 32 gb version if you plan to keep any media on it (videos, music, pics) or you'll run out of space.

You're not the only person to upgrade from a NC. :D
Colchiro, did you install CM10 over CM9 or did you wipe the Touchpad and start over? I have to admit that I haven't updated my Touchpad to CM10 because I didn't think CM10 was ready yet. But what the heck, I'm willing to give it a try... :)

Oh no... :(
Received the TP today, and after charging with an OEM TP charger for a few hours, it still will not power up.

I am seeing the flashing LEDs at the microUSB connector. At least it is doing that.

Any suggestions as to how long I should give it on charge before going the route recommended in the link you provided (BTW, thank you)?

I updated CM9 to CM10 via acme 3. Since acme 3 also fixes file system errors, there's a chance that might hang, so the official route is to update to the latest recovery (TWRP or CWM), make a backup in recovery, use acme uninstaller to remove everything, then reinstall and restore your backup. I ran acme3 w/o anything in my cminstall folder to fix errors, which is risky, but it seemed to work.

I'd recommend you update your recovery (TWRP or CWM) to the latest (TWRP via Goo Manager, CWM to CMW6), and latest moboot, make a backup, then upgrade to CM10. Let me know your comfort level on this and I'll give you more detail.

Moboot will move your backups so you might need to move those files before doing CM10.

Flashing LED is a good sign. Just let it run for awhile. I would think an hour or less. :D

I consider myself an advanced user, but some of what you say is a little foreign to me. Is there a site on the web that would take me through the update process? I got through the CM9 install OK, so I'm sure I could get through CM10 with a fee bumps... :D

Yes, using a stock OEM charger and a very good USB cable. The unit finally burped to life. Wow several hours, and then it came up at 26%. Go figure. I'll give it a good charge then attempt the transplant to Android.

Can't wait. So glad this unit isn't toast!

Aware the OEM charger is 2A, and USB on a computer typically 500mA. Some crazy stuff out there indicating trickle charging can ressurect a unit.

The unit finally burped to life.

Strange it was dead on arrival. I'd charge it up 100%, then check it after 8 or more hours to make sure it's still at 100% (see if it holds a charge). I picked up a "dead" TP and it did the same thing when I got it (usb led flashing), then gave me a warning after a bit that it would charge faster if on the stock charger (it was plugged into my computer at work). At home it fired up after about 30 minutes and I updated it to CM10, then set it aside for about 10 days and it was still at 100% charge. :D

I had one with a bad battery and it would easily drop 2% in 24 hours and needed a new battery, not a fun DIY project.

Rootzwiki has the most info.

How to install jcsullins CM10 Unofficial Build 20121216, with Sound, Camera & Microphone, Updated 2/3/2013 - HP Touchpad - RootzWiki

Only
if you're comfortable with a boot-loopin' TP, should you could try this:

Update to latest recovery (TWRP 2.41 via menu in goo or flash latest CMW6) and latest moboot. Then make a backup in recovery (TWRP or CWM6). Then you can run Acme3 with an empty cminstall folder. It should find a lot of errors, and can easily take 10 minutes to run. Then you can run it a second time to see if it finds any more. The risk it that it might hang and cause problems. Mine hung after 5-10 minutes, I tapped the power button and it continued.... a good day to wear brown pants. :D

If it fails to boot, you have a recovery you can restore (in theory) :D.

If it's good, copy CM10 and the recommended gApps to cminstall and run Acme 3 again, using Roland's excellent guide.

Officially, they recommend acme uninstall, and reinstall via acme3. :D

You should also check out increasing your system folder: How to guide for changing your system, data, and cache partition sizes to whatever you want. - HP Touchpad - RootzWiki

I've done this twice and have about 450 mb for system. Also did it the hard way once. :D

If you update to the latest moboot, your newer TWRP backups (/sdcard/TWRP/backups) will be on the sdcard in a new folder. Previously in a folder with a bunch of zeros and new ones in a unique number. You can move the old ones to the new folder via your computer via USB. Not sure if CWM backups (/sdcard/clockworkmod/backups) are also affected. (I prefer TWRP, which is touch based.)

colchiro... finally got around to installing CM10, and wow, this is a nice tablet configured with JB indeed. I'll have to be making a donation to Justin. So far, so good. Only issue: the keys still vibrate even though I have "Vibrate on touch" unchecked under Settings | Sound.

Changing the keyboard from Google Voice Typing to Android Keyboard, and changing vibrate setting there did the trick. Then went back in and chose Google Voice Typing. Ha - the vibration is off.

Wierd. Could be a JB issue or CM10 issue.
