listening/putting audiobooks

I have tried putting the audio book in the music/video/amazonmp3 files when I open nexus 4 on my laptop. None of the apps pick up the audio book regardless of where I put the files. 1. What apps will allow me to listen to these audio books?
2. Where do I put them when I open the device on my laptop? When I say "where", I mean what folder.

If you use audible you go to library on your phone and download the books you want to listen to to your phone

First, this thread would be better in the general Android apps discussion since it's not specific to the Nexus 4. I'm not trying to be mean, just saying that in the general forum you are more likely to get more responses (and more helpful responses).

That said, while I can not speak to the specific apps you have mentioned, I would suggest that, based on my experience with other audiobook apps, they may/should be a place in the Settings for each of those apps that allows you to choose the folder you want the app to pull from. That would be step 1.

If you can not find such a settings, try downloading a book using the actual app, then look to see (using a file manager app) where on the internal SD the app has downloaded that new audio book. Then move your other audio books to the same location. After doing this you might still need to look in the app itself for a way to "refresh" the "library" for it to see what you've put there.

Failing both of those options, you can try the Mort Player audio book app. I use it every day to listen to audio books in the car.

I don't know if it plays all formats, but you can test it for free to see. It will also let you put your audio book files in any location you want and then pull from that location from the app settings. It can be a bit daunting to use at first, but once you play with it for a while it's very powerful (lots of settings and options).

These are all recordings made by volunteers of books that are in the public domain, which is why they are free, so you won't find anything newer than about 70 years ago or more.

If you friend gave you one of his Audible files (.aa file), nothing will play it. Audible files are DRM'd, and the player ties the file to an account. You cannot share Audible files that way.
