Root [Guide] S-OFF and ROOT HTC Desire with Revolutionary - Updated

Shail31

If you dont have a back up Do you know which custom rom you want to use. Boot into recovery, connect to pc with usb cable, mount sd card storage & copy the rom file to sd. Unmount sd, wipe data partition from recovery (factory reset option), wipe cache. Then install your new Rom via install file from sd.

You should now be back in business with a custom rom.

Hey guys! Sorry if this has been answered before, but i am new to android world (had iOS for 3 years!) and i did all the s-off and root thing successfully. I didnt install a custom ROM, and i tried to move with Titanium backup facebook app from phone storage to sdcard. It moved the app but facebook continued to generate app data on phone storage. Does that happen cause i didnt put a custom ROM?

I accidentally pressed something on titanium backup (i think) and it showed me a list of all my apps sorted by size of application, and seperated data size and sth else. It had something like 3color categories for every application. Can someone tell me how to find this option again?

In titanium press menu >more >overview of app storage.

app data is always stored on the internal data partition unless you flash a custom Rom which supports data to ext. Most don't support it anyway. Titanium will force more apps to SD via menu >batch >move to SD.

There are 2 ways to create more space for apps. Read about both here

I managed to fix it realising a fundamental error on my part not checking the HBOOT version.Using revolutionary changed my HBOOT version from 0.93----
to 6.93.1002.This made it impossible to install the custom leedroid rom which requires 0.93 that I was trying to install and failing everytime. Finally found R2 ZM (ICS Styled Redux2) rom for my HBOOT version and works perfect. In short I think guys always check your HBOOT version before installing a rom .
Also AlphaRev 1.8 is the website to fix your HBOOT version.Merely download and rename the folder to PB99IMG.ZIP and use recovery to install it.
Hope this helps someone.

You cannot install a hboot using recovery.

The PB99IMG is installed from hboot itself, though I'd recommend fastboot flashing the img personally. Full instructions are on the alpharev site, and make sure you take a Nandroid before changing hboot as you'll need to restore from it after the change.

BTW the revolutionary hboot gives the same partitions as stock, so any ROM should work with it (though it isn't optimal for all).

Hello PPL,
Noob here...

I managed to go S-OFF with Revolutionary, but when trying to flash the custom recovery, CWM 2.5.0.7, (at step 6d in the OP) fastboot simply gives me the message "error out of memory".

I can get fastboot to properly list the phone as a device, so the connection is fine.

Could this be because I only have 13 MB free mem on the phone? Which is the original reason why I try to root it...

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

No-one knows, huh?
All I get is something like this

Code:
D:\Android> fastboot flash recovery recovery_CWM_2.5.0.7.img
error out of memory

and then it just hangs there.

I'd really like to get this phone rooted, so I can install something with a2sd+...

Hi djukaa, and welcome to AF :)

Yes, you can. However, with that hboot and S-Off it looks like someone has already done it!

Have you got an app called superuser? If so it's probably rooted. If not, select recovery from the hboot menu and tell us what you find. That will tell us which steps of the guide you still need.

You do not need to run revolutionary itself though, that has certainly been done.

OK, so you have the stock recovery. Let me guess: the phone is second hand? My guess is that the previous owner had rooted using revolutionary, then ran the Gingerbread (android 2.3) update before selling it - this would replace the ROM with an unrooted one and also replace the recovery, but would leave you S-Off (the bit that revolutionary does).

So what you need to do is everything except running revolutionary itself! You need to set up your computer to use fastboot (the stuff about installing the sdk at the start of the tutorial), choose and download a custom recovery (steps 1-3 of the guide). Then use fastboot to flash the recovery (step 6). Download the superuser file (step 4b) and use the recovery to install it (step 7).

Good luck. I'll be going offline shortly, but will be on later in the day (evening at latest).

What do you want from a ROM? Do you like HTC Sense or would you like to try something else? Take a look at the ROMs available at XDA & feel free to ask questions. Probably best to start a new thread though.
