Q: Calendar app that let's me set reminder alarm time?

I've tried a lot of calendar apps from the market, but I can't find any calendar that let's me set reminders the way I want them.

Example: to be on time for a meeting at 9.15 I have to wake up at 7.45, so I want to set a reminder alarm to wake me up 1,5 hours before the meeting.

In my old Symbian calendar I'd simply set the meeting at 9.15 and the alarm at 7.45.

But in Android's calendar I can't enter the reminder time. It only let's me choose between 1 hour before (too late) or 2 hours before (too early).

This seems to be a Google calendar problem. And therefore a general Android calendar problem, because most calendar apps are just frontends for Google's calendar.

This picture summarizes the problem:

Question: is there a calendar app for Android that let's me set an alarm reminder time, so that I can my my calendar ring 1.5 hours before the appointment? Or 1 hour and 15 minutes, or 5h45 min., or whatever time I want instead of being stuck with the inadequate reminder time options of Android's built-in calendar?

Of course I'd also like a widget to show my calendar entries on my home screen. And if the calendar comes with a built-in tasks/to-do list and birthday reminders that would be cool too, but not absolutely required. Syncing is optional, an offline calendar is OK too.

hi,
welcome to android - as an ex symbian user myself i have also asked this question - and the answer is that android cant do it :( you have to set the alarm using number of hours offsets - rubbish i know

try pocket informant maybe as this at least lets you sets a custom number of hours

i use pure calendar widget with PI as it does have its own widgets yet

good luck

cheers

And the reason why Android can't do it is because Google Calendar won't do it, and all those calendar apps in the market are nothing but interfaces for Google Calendar.

Pocket Informant may have a future, but it has plenty of issues for the develpers to work on:
- It is only available as a beta test version that expires 21 Feb 2011.
- There's no way to set a custom ringtone that keeps playing until you switch it off. Having the tone play only once is a sure way to miss reminders.
- You can set the reminder time for tasks the Symbian way, but it doesn't work for appointments.
- The start/end time for tasks doesn't show in day/week/month view, and the tasks themselves don't show in widgets.

Did I overlook something and are there other calendar apps for Android that do not use Google Calendar?

Or should we ask someone at XDA to port the Symbian calendar to Android? :D

What makes the limited number of reminder options totally ridiculous is that you can set the exact number of minutes in google's online calendar. Zero minutes, 4 hours, 666 minutes, the calendar on google.com/calendar lets you enter anything you like.

Therefore each and every calendar app based on google could have an option to set a custom number of minutes/hours (like pocket informant). Moreover, all these apps could also offer time entry the symbian way. They only need to calculate the number of minutes between the time you enter and the start time of the appointment so that you don't have to do the maths yourself.

So the problem is not google's calendar. The programs that interact with google's calendar are just incomplete. A few extra lines of code would do the job.

Gemini's 1.5 hour entry is a step in the right direction, and so is the "on time" reminder option. Too bad it has a horrible user interface. Entering times with a scrollbar... no way.

For now it's Jorte for me (best user interface of all calendar apps I tried, and it manages to squeeze a lot of info into a small widget), together with Pocket Informant for when I need to set a precise reminder time.

And of course I run Calendar Notifier, because the default "ring once, don't repeat" behaviour of most calendar apps is a sure way to miss reminders.

The website version of Google Calendar allows for custom reminder times, so there's no reason why Android calendar apps cannot. It's no different from what Google Calendar offers, it's just using a feature that Google already built into its calendar.

If Business Calendar Free can do it, then all Google-based Android calendar apps can do it. They all tap into the same background service.
