Wanted: Videos of Lagging on Your RMHD or RHD

This is actually a very good question. With all the posts of people complaining about 'lag' I've often wondered just what people consider 'lag'. I would bet that one person's lag issues is another person's "what the hell are you talking about?"! Unfortunately, I have no way of videoing lag. I don't have any! I get a brief hesitation on occasion when I first activate the phone from the sleep state and only notice it when I rotate through the first page. It's a very brief hesitation and then it's fine. If that's what the naysayers are calling 'lag' then I have to laugh.

So post 'em if you got 'em!

I don't think lags are so bad as some of us make it out to be. But with stock settings, apps, there are definitely some lags.

Especially the circles widget seems quite sluggish after JB update. It refreshes time, weather, battery when I unlock phone. The worst part with the circles is when you back out of camera app, it takes a while to redraw itself.

But most lags, if not all, can be eliminated with a little bit of setting tweaks, disabling some apps. I disabled circles widgets, set the window/transition scale to 0.5x in developer setting and my RHD is nearly lag free now.

I'm suspecting that some of the "lagging" problems we're reading about are on devices where a Factory Data Reset was not done after the update.

IMNHO it would be helpful to track the answer to that question also.

... Thom

I did not do a factory reset after JB. I'm not using the Circles widget anymore. I don't notice any lag. I don't notice any speed difference between ICS and JB.

That's why I asked for videos. I want to see what people are talking about.

No lag here. Not using circles though, using nova. With and without the GPU rendering option I have no lag, but that seems to be a pretty big part of a fix for everyone else. No FDR after the update done either.

And I should mention that I'm underclocked to 1.2GHz as well and still no lag.

I have to admit, I was pretty surprised that it seemed to be such an issue around here. I had no problems with mine, I'd assumed that everyone else had the same. I'd be interested in seeing this as well.

I WAS not having any issues with lag. I am on JB and did a FDR after the update. I use very few apps (have downloaded <10).

However, I am now having very bad lag issues, where my phone becomes unresponsive for ~5-60sec at times, or sometimes simply slows significantly to the point where I can watch transition animations in slow motion.

I did not do a FDR, but Jelly Bean was waiting for me when I activated my phone. So just was I was setting up the phone the day I purchased it, the OTA came in.

I am using Nova, and I do see occasional, what I would call, hesitation - not true lag. I had a Droid Eris, so I know what real lag is. However, I also had a SG3, and that phone never lagged or hesitated at all.

Lag is a matter of personal perspective, unless it is horribly obvious. I had the rmhd on ICS for a couple months before the JB update. I noticed immediately the lag, as well as other things that almost made me take the phone back (UMS, HDMI out). My benchmark is stock ICS vs stock JB, and there is DEFINITELY a lag with JB on my phone now...waiting in transit between apps, keyboard, phone, screens, etc. Did FDR, reboot often, shut down apps, adjusted transition and GPU, etc...whatever was recom here, and still a little lag compared to ICS. It is no problem and still a great phone. Much better than any out there. I don't want another launcher, and I like the circles, so I put up with the minor lagginess in hopes of another update/fix. As time goes by my memory of ICS is fading, so all is good!!!!

Same here. Sometimes there is a slight hesitation on drawing the circles widget. That's the only lag I see. Doesn't bother me. As far as scrolling between pages etc. I don't see any lag at all. I have to say that hesitation on the circles only showed up after JB upgrade. So hopefully they will fix it with another OTA.

I can understand your frustration with JB vs ICS on RMHD. I think Moto is responsible for this issue in their stock ROM. JB performs better on most other devices I think. I was using Galaxy Nexus prior to RHD, and when my Gnex was updated to 4.1.1 from 4.0.4 it became way more butterly smooth than in ICS along with other improvements (battery, camera, etc). So I know that JB is smoother than ICS in pure stock form of OS.

I like their new Blur looking close to stock ICS/JB. But that seems like where their similarity to stock OS ends. Despite more powerful processor, RHD feels like nowhere near fluidity of Gnex on JB, possibly due to poorly optimized apps like circles and some other bloats. For now, we can only minimize the lags by disabling circles, adjusting transition scale in developer setting, using other launcher like Nova/Apex. Hopefully Moto sorts this out in the next update.

18 posts, almost two weeks and not a single video of lag. I think the point has been made!

It may be hard to capture it on video if it's intermittent. It's not like people have camcorders lying around these days. I haven't felt any lag, but I know I had it on my Bionic after the first upgrade. I thought i might have had something to do with Google Music, but I just did a factory reset and all was well. This was for Gingerbread to ICS update on my Bionic.

By lag, I mean taking 30 seconds for the Dialer to pop up. and 30-40 seconds to bring up Handscent. It was unusable until the reset. Clearly that's not what people are reporting here, I don't think.

I agree on both counts. I can't even find my video camera! But also just about everyone has a cell phone that takes video so there must be someone out there experiencing this horrific lag we keep hearing about that has a family member or friend nearby that can take a quick clip and upload it.

Your definition of lag is the best I've heard yet and what I would actually consider lag. But like you, I don't think that is what everyone is complaining about. And perhaps that is why we have yet to see any videos - as people come to terms with what is actually problematic lag and just momentary hesitation, they are likely re-considering their position on the matter to avoid ridicule.

So the point is that anyone complaining of lagging is lying? Stupid?

My phone lags severely at times, sometimes to the point that I want to smash it against the wall. But capturing a video of it would require me to record every single second I use my phone since it happens completely randomly and infrequently. Even if I did know when it was going to happen I'm not sure I'd take the time to record it and post it here just to prove it to a few people who are lucky enough to have lag-free phones and don't believe that anyone else has problems.
