Battery Life Increase

I received my new S3 on Thursday. Like all new phones, I ran the battery down pretty fast that it was scary. One of the first apps that I've used on my previous phone is Juice Defender. I got around to installing it finally yesterday and today is the first full day of JD. I've been using the phone quite a bit today with texts, bluetooth, browsing and just plain playing around with it. I started around 8:30 am, it's been over 11 hours and I have 55% left on my battery. According to Juice Defender it's increased my battery life 1.90% and I believe it. I have the Ultimate Juice Defender, but there is a free basic version in the Play store that you can try out. Ultimate gives you more custom control over things that suck the life out of a battery

I used to use JD. It's eh. The only connection I have on usually are data. No wifi, or bluetooth, or GPS. I figured I can save a lot of battery by turning off all the mobile connections (data, wifi, all that crap), and underclocking the CPU to stupid low clock speeds via profile in SetCPU. I set it to something really low when the is screen if off and the battery lasts extremely long.

I used it on my old nexus s however when I began using it on my galaxy s it really didn't work as well as it had on my old phone. I have the paid option but it still disconnected me from everything until I turned screen on. Considering The screen times out when waiting for responses I get signed out of everything it isn't as useful as it used to be.

Now I haven't found the battery to be as poor as I was expecting considering the amount of threads about battery saving. I bought an extra battery but haven't once needed to use it.

juice defender and apps like it are just for lazy people , there is no options they activate that cannot be done manually .

i am a moderate user on my phone but kinda addicted to facebook and i need to check emails regularly but still got 1 day 8 hours and 23 mins and still had 22% left .

running a app like juice defender stops your phone from going into a deep standby thereby draining battery more than if it was not there in the first place.

seriously just read up on your phones settings and do it manually , a far more productive method and no crappy software .

Hi all, first post here. I just recently made the switch from an (ancient) blackberry torch to the Galaxy S III. The first thing I immediately noticed was the horrendous battery life. I could barely get through half a day (granted I was doing a lot of simultaneous downloading/set-up/browsing/WiFi those first couple weeks).

I heard about juice defender and I agree with most of what the others have said - it certainly helped - but i could not imagine having to deal with any kind of all day, vacation sort of circumstance where I would want to use the camera, might need gps/maps and a fair bit of internet browsing and would not be able to charge up for a good 6-12 hours. I didn't want to find myself in the situation that I for which I ended up going with the S III, only to find it totally useless on account of the battery.

If you are half as disappointed with the battery life as I was, the only way to go is an extended battery. You become limited in terms of what case you can use and, depending on the battery, you phone can nearly double the thickness, but now I never feel like the battery is draining quickly. Even though the actual mAh rating is just a tad over twice the OEM battery, to me it seems like it lasts much more than twice as long.

This thread on XDA Devs was very helpful: [Well cant post links since its my first post, but its called "Ultimate battery list with extended cases" under the SIII sub-forum]

I ended up getting the Anker battery and have been very happy but it sounds like there are a number of viable options - including options for those who dont want to loose the slim form factor. (I will say that Qcell case didnt really work on the Anker extended cover though)

Well there's my 0.02.

Thank you very much for letting me know about Juice Defender. My Battery actually last now! I have 2 different battery extenders cause my phone was so bad.

My phone would barely last 8 hours when I wasn't using it. This app is incredible. I love how you can customize it. It's ability to keep the radio off unless needed is a life savor.

Hello all, I know I'm new here, but just thought I'd share my 0.02 cents worth. When I originally got my S3, like all of you I was a little shocked (coming from an iPhone 4 that lasted 3 days without needing charged), however I had to keep reminding myself that these are not your standard flip phones anymore. What you're asking these phones to do, is nothing more than what you'd ask your Laptop to do. Yes, as soon as you put it to sleep, it's going to conserve battery power, but think of it like this, you play high end games, or run a high end application (and on these phones high end applications can be word processing, email, web browsing), then yes, the drain is going to be more and more.

What I did notice prior to updating from Ice cream sandwich to JB is this, the more I used the phone, the smarter it got. Make sure you hold down the home key, and kill all apps you're not using, clear your cache out by holding down the home key and checking your task manager, and usually you will find that your phone can run about 2 days with a full charge. So far (knock on wood) I've had 2 days straight before a charge is required.

As for the wi-fi, here's a simple solution to resolve battery issues. Not sure if you all know this or not, but by default the wi-fi is not set up to sleep when the phone is set up to sleep, so do this...

Go to Apps, Settings, Wi-Fi (Tap on Wi-Fi, not the toggle switch), Tap on the Menu button in the bottom left corner, and select Advanced. There will be an option that says Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep. Change this to never. This will put the Wi-Fi to sleep when the phone sleeps, thus saving you a ton of battery time. As soon as you wake the phone, it automatically reconnects to the Wi-Fi source and you are good to go.

Hope this helps.
