Samsung releases its firmware updates according to regions. They have not given all regions the latest updates, like for S5830 the best they gave was 2.3.6, and that was over a year ago. It was S5830DDKQ8, for the Indian region and nearby countries.
A lot of people use firmwares of different regions. I am from India but i am using the S5830XWKPN firmware, that is for the european countries, also i am rooted so i have not faced any problems, but if you intend to use unrooted stock firmware, you may want to look up the problems first that you may have if you use a different firmware.
If Kies and OTA does not show an avaialable update then Odin is your only option for an updated software.
In my opinion, if you still have warranty then its best to try rooting and flashing via Odin now, because if you mess up you can go to the service center with an innocent look and tell them that you were playing angry birds and it just stopped working all of a sudden, get it fixed for free.
