I just shattered the glass on my Razr M (a ceramic mug fell off a shelf and landed on the phone) and I do not have insurance and therefore can't get an easily affordable replacement. I called Verizon to see what my options were and the CSR said that one thing I might want to consider is getting a new side contract or "dummy line" for 9.99 a month which would then allow me to get a new Razr M at the discounted price, which I could in turn use on my existing account, though I'd still have to pay that 9.99 for the next two years. Is this my best option?

I've scouted eBay and craigslist for phones and could probably get one for around half the retail cost of a new one, but of course the less out of pocket expense the better.

Any advice (aside from ponying up for the insurance next time)?

:(

Please note that an additional line cost more than $9.99 a month. Depending on your state tax rate, the total including fees and taxes is usually around $13 a month, or $312 for the period of two years. Then you will have to pay $50 + tax for the phone, driving your total cost close to $370.

On ebay Razr M usually runs less than $300.

Yeah, I've been on the phone with Verizon CS running the numbers a couple times already and if I can find a new (or very gently used) and legit Razr M online for 300 or less that'd definitely be the way to go as far as saving money in the long run. Only thing that sucks is having to go so long without a phone!

Decided to check with a local Verizon store and the manager approved an early upgrade for me which netted me a brand new Razr M and a bundle of items (car charger, headphones, HDMI cable, shell holster and glass protectors) all for under $300.00 as well as a $50.00 mail in rebate. One hell of a deal, all things considered. And yes, I got the full insurance package this time. All said, a spectacular end to the tale... five star review incoming for the Verizon store folks for making sure this customer walked away happy!

:congrats:
