Root The "Fix everything by turning your phone into an Evo 3d" thread

Thanks so much L.A. , last week I did the s-off and flashed the new radio, PRI etc. One question though, adding the roaming PRL seems to caused an issue that when my signal goes low enough, I get the roaming triangle and trying to make a call results is a voice recording asking if I would like to make a collect call, or I get on Verizons network and get a different message. Now going into settings and updating PRL seemed to fixed the issue , but not sure If it will come back again when I get in a weak signal area. Now if I remember correctly, Sprint phones would roam with no additional charge, but I don't think Virgin will. Any thoughts? otherwise everything is running much better.
The rom you are using has roaming, go in and disable it in settings.

Greetings. I finally got around to rooting my phone. I am going to try and get s-off today. I have the latest update that fixed the radio interference issue so phone was working fine before I rooted.

My question is do I still need to do these steps? I thought I read the that the radio that is posted here is not the latest. So if I do this will it revert my radio to a previous version?

flash everything except the radio and you will be fine... if you end up flashing the old one, dont worry, its easily changable...

<-- My experience

After having been running a rooted evo V 4g with Harmonia I decided to go s-off. For the past week I have been getting a tremendous amount of radio errors. I decided to take the plunge and perform JuopunutBear s-off on a Windows 7 64 bit OS. I changed the compatibility settings of the Controlbear.exe to Vista under the file's properties. I NEVER went stock rom, but rather went through the process under Harmonia, I did back up my files prior to this just in case. However, aside from Harmonia and a 64 bit OS I followed the JuopunutBear S-OFF steps and had NO issues with the s-off process.

After all was complete there was NO loss of data anywhere on my phone, Harmonia kept running without skipping a beat. The only small hi-cup I noticed was that Google Play Store refused to download apps. I disabled wifi and cleared Play Store cache and repeated this cycle twice, and after this have had no further issues with Play Store.

My question now is having followed the OP's steps on page one I'd like to know whether I really needed to downgrade the Radio? Is there a Radio that works better (not that I've had issues) and should I upgrade? Is there somewhere where PRL files are kept up to date for us to perform updates?

PRL (optional) is a bit more in depth.
This seems to be a pain in the neck for most, however posting the diag drivers above may help. If you can't get it, don't stress as this is optional and usually has the least effect of all of these.

1. Disable debugging on your device (settings, developer options) and connect it to your computer

2. Install QPST

3. Open "QPST Configuration" in the "QPST" folder under Programs

4. Dial ##3424#

5. Click on the “Ports” tab and “Add a new port”, select it based on what your phone connected as. You should find it easily enough.

6. In the top menu, select “Start Clients” and open Service Programming.

7. Select your device

8. Select "Read from Phone". I will ask for your MSL code. If you don't have it, search the Play Store for MSL Reader, it should be the first result. It will tell you your MSL).

9. Go to the "Roam" tab

10. Click Browse and find your PRL file (you will need to unzip it).

11. Select Write to phone, once it reboots, you are are done. Sometimes this generates an error as it finishes, ignore it, it still worked (you can verify in "about phone".

I got to step 5 and then I got lost. How to I find out what port to use? It keeps saying no phone.

Questions:

1. Can I choose to do only the PRI and PRL and will those help my signal get better?
my phone has the latest update installed and PRL is 61009 I believe which is higher. Is the one you provide better at all?

2. Exactly what does the PRI and PRL do?

3. What version is the PRL you provide? Mines like 1.53 something. Is yours better that you provided?

2. Exactly what does the PRI and PRL do?
PRL is a list of towers you can connect to.
If you have a good signal, it's not really of concern.

PRI is debated. Some claim it has to do with priority, and some say it has to do with data rate syncing, others say it has to do with serving voice over a data line. While the latter is true for ISDN data lines, I have yet to see a thorough explanation from an authority in regards to cellular systems.

So im just gonna come out and ask a noob question...

How would i know if this worked?
What problem are you trying to fix?

It's generally not a good idea to flash things like a PRI or radio unless you are experiencing a problem, then you can tell if it worked by whether or not that problem went away.

Some users flash things because they hope to make their phone "better" but if you are doing it for that reason the only way to tell is to perform benchmark(s) before and after the change.

Thanks Leslie for the info. I'm on PRL 61009 I believe. Most updated one that it let me update too. If I change my location to another city (like 50 miles away) will it detect that and tell me to update the PRL again to support the new area? Like if I went back to the stock ROM anyways.

Also; this new area I get like 1 bar or 0 bars and no 3G. I have WiFi so I don't care for 3G really. So will downgrading the PRL to the one you provided possibly give me better signal? How come it was that exact PRL that you chose to be put in your OP?

Thanks again BTW for your answer. :]
