Stop right there. There isn't a phone that has similar specs to the Evo. Put aside the screen size, the larger battery, the dual cameras, the 1GB ROM and 8GB internal storage, the rumored Froyo debut, and the built-in wifi hotspot ... no phone -- repeat, NO PHONE -- can compete with 4G. Its like ... a whole other G added to 3G. ;)

If you're in a 4G city and you pass on the Evo, then I have no sympathy for you and your impending buyer's remorse.

Now that I have recovered from that massive fanboy rant,...
All the stuff this phone is supposed to do it great, assuming you are standing in the 15 square feet that has sprint 4g coverage.
If you actually leave the house and travel any where, it's not going to work.

We should be able to root it out of the box.. no? Simply by holding down a button while powering on. Doesn't rooting just = unlocking?

Were you referring to how long until we see a mod like Cyanogen?

You should read up on rooting. Android Central has been doing some Android background stories for noobs so you can understand what we're all talking about. Haha check it out :D

Anybody else disappointed that the USB is located on the side? To me it seems the phone wasn't exactly well thought out. Like the power button and the volume rocker on the left side. You cant have both of them on the same side. Its just nor ergonomic ( I think thats the right word to describe it ). If you hold the phone with your left hand ( which I assume most people do ) your thumb is located on the the left side of the phone where the volume is. Makes sense but then your pointing finger is located on the top right where the 3.5mm head jack is located. The 3.5mm jack should have been located at the bottom so there could be docs with speakers made. I love having a dock for my phone and I really think the best way is having the phone straight up opposed to having it on its side. ohh and I really hope some one makes a back that is not contoured cause it looks really tacky. I like to pick up my phone knowing it is both featured rich with a gread OS and also looks high end. I dont want to pick it up every morning saying wth was HTC thinking?

naw man, the 3.5 is right where it needs to be - on top, so that with the phone in your pocket, your headphone cord points up.

docks can probably use the USB in landscape.

Too add to that, just think how much more wifi is available that 4G.

Actually it would be better on the bottom. Because when you pull the phone out of your pocket the phone will be in the correct orientation. If it's on top you'll have to readjust your grip so you're holding it right.

So i usually stay away from posts like the one i'm about to make like the plague because they don't really mean anything...I repeat, what i'm about to post doesn't mean anything, but nevertheless, i found it amusing.

So I visit Amazon to look for something completely unrelated for the house and in the section that's called More items to consider it shows me two items...

Amazon.com: HTC Incredible Charging USB 2.0 Data Cable for your Phone! This professional grade custom cable outperforms the original!: Electronics

and...

Amazon.com: HTC Incredible Professional Blue LED Car Charger for your Phone with digital rapid and slow charge features!: Electronics

Again, this means absolutely nothing as these are generic accessories but i found it amusing so i'm sharing.

What is "orange peeling"?

Like the bumpy surface of an orange. Kind of a rippled effect. if you look very closely at cars (even new ones) there's often a small ripple in the pain,

FWIW, love the Best Skins Ever (that's the brand). Usually about 7-8 buck for entire kit (all sides), free shipping for 3 or more, but only a buck or 2 otherwise.

DIY but very do-able

You know, I never really noticed but upside down makes sense. I just realized that I always put my phone in my pocket upside down. Plus it works even if it's not in your pocket. If you lay the phone on your desk and are looking at it rightside up, the jack would be closest to you if it was on the bottom.

I put my phone upside down in my pocket so when you take it out you dont have to flip the phone. Idk its hard to put into words. I think apple did a great job putting the speakers on the bottom cause if your phone is facing up the speakers are muffled. If the phone is facing down than the speakers are facing up. Most phones have their speakers on the back which also gets muffled. Im pretty disappointed the Incredible doesn't have stereo speakers like most other high end phones. If the Incredible's speaker is anything like the Nexus One's where gonna have a problem cause its small and puny sounding.

I was drooling over the EVO, but I came up with a few issues:

1. The front facing camera is reserved for future use right now - no telling when video calling will be enabled and whether or not it will strictly require 4G. (On a side note, this is the intention of Verizon's deal with Skype such that LTE will enable video calling and I think you'll see their LTE phones starting to include front facing cameras.)

Looking the pace (and relative ease) of Android application development, I have little doubt that video conferencing, web chat, video telephony, facial recognition, and other applications will be forthcoming. Its simply too enticing of a feature for developers to ignore it, especially since more and more phones are going to include the feature from now on.

2. I live in the suburbs of a city that has 4G - Baltimore. But that's just it, it's mostly in the city and the immediate surrounding area which isn't that useful to me, especially since the better residential areas are a bit further away from the city with a few exceptions. It's not available where I live. It is where I work which would be a plus.

I understand the coverage concerns; they're legitimate for anyone not in a 4G market. I'm lucky enough to both live and work in the heart of one of Clear's most developed cities, so its really a no-brainer for me.

3. Putting 2 in perspective, the wireless hotspot feature isn't free, but even if you pony up, it's a beneficial feature for 4G, again which isn't avaialable everywhere. I'm not spending a lot of time in Philly or Baltimore, and if you travel, you have a high probability of the hotspot feature being relegated to 3G (or worse?). Uh, can't I do that with Verizon?

So even if the Evo is relegated to 3G, its hotspot feature is still better than any Verizon phone (8 simultaneous devices). Can you tether on Verizon? Yes, but to do it legally is expensive (more expensive than Sprint). You can do both illegally, but again, the Evo is simply more capable. And when you are in 4G coverage, throw the comparison out the window -- the Evo delivers broadband speeds. Everyone in the Starbucks will buy you a latte to get on your 4G hotspot. ;)

4. Supposedly Verizon will get a version of the EVO down the road (early next year?) which piques my interest with LTE about to be turned on in 25-30 markets. The EVO with superior coverage would be awesome. Let's face it, Verizon's 4G will expand far faster than Sprint's so a Verizon version of the EVO would be a better 2 year investment, even a year later than Sprint's. This, of course, assumes no larger disparity in pricing comes with 4G.

Phones these days last 12-18 months for early adopters, such as most of us in these forums. Verizon isn't going to have a LTE phone any sooner than 16 months from now. I view the EVO as the bridge phone to get me to the time when all carriers have 4G options -- then I can reassess. Until then, the Evo will be the fastest phone. Period.

I do like the idea of the larger screen. I'm not sure I'm ready to part with the optical trackpad, though I've never used an Android phone so we'll have to see how useful it really is for me. I absolutely love the idea of mini-HDMI on a phone. It's about the only thing that makes me jealous of Sprint customers with the EVO. I'll be more than happy with the Incredible and Verizon's coverage, and I'll use my annual upgrade if something worthy with 4G comes along in the next 12 months for Verizon.

Phone choices are personal, so be happy with what you choose. You will have a share of buyer's remorse when you see someone rockin' a new Evo in June. But such is life in modern times.

I absolutely wish that were true, but I think we're going to hear all about the MS POS phones tomorrow and maybe the NFL Red Zone App, but not much else.
Exactly. I'm not sure why the story is so confident the flier is referring to the Incredible and not one of the other five new phones most of which are set to be released (and probably announced) before the Incredible.

Yes, and here's the other thing. When the phone is laying down on a desk it is most convenient when the jack is on the bottom. With the Incredible the cord will wrap around the top and come down. Not a big deal, but would have been nice if htc put a little more thought in this aspect of the design.

I hear all this, but anyone who has had a phone, mp3 player, ipod or even iPhone i think, is very used ot having the headset jack on top or high on a side.
