OK I've had my nexus a year ago last Xmas. Been a pretty damn good phone. But yesterday it stopped charging. I would plug it in and.... nothing. Tried several chargers to no avail. I left it on the charger over night and it charged it 40% in 9 he's. Left it on my car charger while working and it fully charged but now it says charging even when its unplugged?

It took a spontaneous reboot and was stuck at the Google title screen for a very long time before this all started .

Help. It this just the battery dying? Or something more serious?

Better Battery Stats from XDA developer chamonix It will show you if some app is keeping your phone awake, and if your phone is going into deep sleep, etc. It's very helpful.

But it sounds like you might have something else going on possibly... Of course, checking you battery stats and wakelocks, deep sleep etc. would be a first place to start, along with of course, trying a different battery as thegreen mentioned.

If the stats look reasonable, then you might want to start uninstalling recently installed apps and also wiping their data/cache before uninstalling them (not sure if that matters, but I do it). Worst comes to worst, if it isn't your battery, and you cant figure out any apps causing it, a factory reset can work wonders. *** But be sure to back up all your important data like photos or downloaded files, call logs, sms logs before doing that, do a nandroid and copy the nandroid to your computer, along with a titanium backup of you user ans system apps and data.

And if you've messed with system files/apps. you could try flashing a factory image to just reset everything... but maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself, just trying to list options.

Warranty is a year but you could/should call Samsung to see if they will still warranty it. They did a free warranty replacement on my screen despite being out of warranty. IF they do you'll be without your phone for about two weeks.

As far as repair, the USB port is available at several online cell phone parts dealers for pretty cheap. Not sure how difficult it is to replace but it looks fairly simple.

Just created an account to respond to this. I was having the exact same issues the last few days. I must say it was so frustrating that i purchased a new battery and external charger as a work around. Turns out i didn't need it, as it has suddenly fixed itself (for how long i don't know).
Looking back on the whole saga it seems that it all started from me using my car charger. I'm not sure the ins and outs but i suspect the power it was supplying was dirty and the phone didn't like it. The only way i could get it to charge was on my pc usb, and even that was very unreliable. Took forever to charge and the charge would't last. That, and sometimes it would constantly disconnect/reconnect and i would get a message saying that my usb device had failed.
Today when i went to work i decided to plug it into my car charger and was able to squeeze a bit of juice into it. It wasn't until i was on my way home later when i plugged it in the screen lit up as it should (something it wasn't doing the last few days) and when i got home, plugged it into my AC charger, all was good again. It seems the same thing that 'broke' it, fixed it.
I really thought my phone was dead and i wasn't really keen to get the usb replaced as others here and elsewhere suggested. Another fix was to bend the pin upwards toward the screen to provide a better contact, this didn't work for me.
Anyway, something to try before you perform surgery on your phone. Or you could go down the route of an external charger. Was $10 on ebay.

Edit: Mine phone is a GSM nexus on 4.2.2 and was crippled by a cheap car charger from ebay which i have since binned
