ok you can try Safe Mode - DROID X by Motorola
Safe Mode - DROID X by Motorola

Tried safe mode (Power ON, hold Menu button for >30 seconds) twice, and in between tries I removed the battery.

No different - this thing very slowly gets past the red Motorola logo to the androidword, then stops.

POWER + HOME got to the Android system recovery menu --

Tried to get a local expert to help today - he didn't get any further than I did, so I transferred my phone number to a spare non-android flip phone. WOW! - that is really a step backwards.

I'm assuming this Droid X is bricked:

1. When turned ON, it boots as far as the word android, then stops. It never gets to a home screen.

2. POWER with HOME button produces Android recovery screen. It will WIPE DATA and/or CACHE, and REBOOT, but goes to #1 above.

3. POWER with VOLUME CONTROLS produces Bootloader 30.04 screen white-on-black, "OK to program, connect USB cable" but I don't have a clue what to do from there. Pushing POWER again shuts it down instantly.

Removing the battery, facing east, etc. seem to make no difference. If there is hope, it might be via #3 - but if I connect a USB cable, then what?

its not brick, as in not fix able
just flash the 2.3.4 DX .sbf with rsd lite
links in my list

Good to know it's not a dead issue - BUT:

The unit will not boot.
...and
In "Bootloader" mode (PWR+VOL KEYS) the computer doesn't see the phone at the end of the USB cable.

How do I get to the phone's memory, or whatever? Do I remove the SD chip and externally install on it? If so, specifically WHAT FILE(S) DO I PUT ON THE CHIP??

Thanks

there maybe another way to install rom, if you haven't flash sbf yet

pull battery, reinsert battery, press power,
right after the motorola logo, watch for led light to blink blue
when you see blue, press volume down

phone will boot to android boot menu
select recovery, then cwm recovery
install rom per instructions posted before

if you do not see the blue light this may not work

...and
In "Bootloader" mode (PWR+VOL KEYS) the computer doesn't see the phone at the end of the USB cable.
....

install moto drivers, if you are going the rsd Lite direction
Motorola_End_User_Driver_Installation_5.4.0.zip

if that does not help, look in PCs device manager for a unknown device
Dx should look like
droidxbootloader_zpsb76d9bbe.png

if it's missing a driver it may look like
Droidxnodriverbootloader_zps84704885.png

but at least pc is seeing it, just need to install correct driver

if you can not find the phone in device manager,
you may need to try a different
usb data cable
usb port, ports in back of pc work better
pc or mac

if you are trying the ezSBF iso method, no drivers are needed

Yes, apparently the phone had already taken .621 - presumably OTA without asking me, or I forgot. So, I just tried various combinations from your encyclopedia until something worked, et voila! I now have a working phone - my service back is to this piece of hardware. Even unrooted 2.3.4, I'm really happy!!!
