Root System update

Download the OTA but don't start the update process. Open the OTA zip file which is in your sdcard/download directory. I recommend copying the file to your PC and opening it on your PC with 7zip. There is another zip file in it called framework.zip. Open firmware.zip and you will find recovery.img in it. Copy that recovery.img to either your sdcard or your PC. If you use PC, you can use the fastboot command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" with USB connection to fastboot. Or, if you install Flash Image GUI on your phone, you can copy the recovery.img file to your sdcard and flash directly from your phone using Flash Image GUI.

This will go back to stock recovery and one doesn't have to lock the bootloader?

Hey guys I'm trying to RUU and it says failed main version older. I have tried both the application and the zip file. Am I using the wrong file? I've tried both the .exe and .zip on the link that was posted on page 7.

Edit: File name of app: RUU_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_VM_1.13.652.2_Radio_1.06.00.0426_NV_1.53_144_release_262287_signed.exe

That's because you have already installed the November OTA which has a higher main version (mainver) than the RUU.

See the S-ON section of this post for how to work around that and flash the RUU.

I flashed ramjet's zip from page one and I got stuck in a bootloop. I was running midnightromcm. On my bootloader screen it says locked but I have S-off and bootloader 1.5. I was able to get Harmonia to run but no luck with midnightromcm. Anyone know how I can relock and get 4.2.2 working again?
No need to unlock if you are S-OFF since you can flash a custom hboot like JBear or ENG to run the same fastboot commands.

Another user had the same problem and reflashing the CM10 ROM resolved it. For some reason those ROM's are notorious for boot looping and rebooting randomly and it can usually be fixed only by doing a fresh flash. I've had it happen to me after just installing an app from the Play Store and rebooting. It even happened to me with some of the CM10 based ROM's lens_flare created.

Those problems don't seem to exist in the Evervolv and AOKP ROM's which are based on different source code. I think there must be some underlying problem in agrabren's source code for the Evo 3D that is affecting all ROM's based on that.

You'll need to flash your old HBOOT again.

Thank you for your response, ramjet! I am downloading AOKP now but midnightrom kept bootlooping when I reinstalled it.
Are you using 4EXT recovery? Make sure you "format all partitions except SD card" before flashing the ROM. I know there are a lot of VM and Sprint users with the updated firmware that are running CM 10.x ROM's successfully, albeit some with the intermittent boot loop and rebooting problems.

Edit: Also make sure the 1.50 hboot got installed successfully. I didn't realize that you changed to 1.57 since that's not necessary to flash the firmware zip but that hboot won't be able to flash and boot any JB ROM's.

Yes and yes I formatted all partitions except sdcard. I'm about to try aokp now I'll let you know if it works.

So AOKP works. Will restoring my /data from 4ext backup restore all my apps and data without any issues?
No. The data partition is not compatible between different ROM's and sometimes not even different versions of the same ROM.

Were you trying to restore data after flashing the CM10 ROM? If so, try doing a flash of just that ROM and the appropriate gapps as it appears to be something going on the data partition that is causing the boot loops.

No I didn't try to restore anything because I wasn't sure until you answered about the incompatibility. I mainly want to get my call log and texts back. Is this possible with a 4ext backup?
Some people have been successful doing that with AppExtractor but it really should be used to restore to the same ROM. I suggest trying a clean flash of the CM10 ROM you were using before to see if you can get that to boot now that you know you can use AOSP ROM's successfully, then trying that app to get your apps, messages and settings back. Don't restore anything to the data partition.

There's a similar app called Nandroid Manager but I don't have any experience with that one.

Thanks for the help. I managed to get it flashed back to RUU and then updated to lastest OTA and then unlocked again. I can verify it is the latest software version still. Now when I try to use the Wifi Tether app it says "Sorry but your kernel does not have all the necessary features for running this application." If I ignore it it is says this will not run. If I try to run the app it does not work and when I turn it off it says you may not be rooted/unknown issue with this phone, try restarting.

Does anyone think this is just the app not supported by the lastest OTA rom, or am I not really rooted?
