Help camera videos: can i set a separate default location vs photos?

hi forum

for photos and videos taken with the camera, there is only one default location
(which does change to either internal or SD card, depending if you have one inserted).

i would like to store videos in a separate default location. is that possible?

the main reason is:
i'd like to have my videos in a separate folder because i use Dropbox Camera Upload Sync. And Dropbox uploads ALL images/videos in the default camera folder.

so the very second an image or video is saved, the Dropbox upload starts (on Wifi at least). that's great, but not really.
Dropbox doesn't have a feature to filter out videos.

my only manual workaround is to move videos to a separate folder right after taking them.... i don't like that :)

You might be able to do this with Tasker. Taken directly from their description page:

* FILE: Browse Files, Directory Create/Delete/Move, File Copy/Delete/Move/Open, Write To File, Read Line, Read Paragraph, Zip/Unzip File

In the description above one of the options is to "Move". I would assume you could Create the condition to move any videos from the default folder to a specified folder you choose. There is also websites that share "Tasker Profiles" that are already written.

This is a good suggestion and definitely worth a try, but I wonder whether it would work given the OP's concern. Once the video hits the default folder, its on its way to Dropbox. So Tasker could MOVE it, but the question is whether that move would be before or after it goes to Dropbox, which is what the OP is trying to avoid.

This seems like something that could be changed with a custom ROM

One method that could work but would be long-winded would be to:

1. Disable the automatic photo upload to dropbox.

2. Install an app such as dropsync that will automatically sync a designated folder on your phone with a folder in your online dropbox folder whenever a change is made to that folder on your phone (such as adding a file or updating an existing file).

3. Use Tasker to move photos from the default camera folder into the synced dropbox folder, which will then upload it to dropbox.

I'm not saying it's elegant, but I think it would work, if you could get Tasker to move jpegs but not video files.

hey guys, thanks for everyone's input and advice.

"manually" syncing to dropbox would be a solution, BUT:
the beauty of the dropbox "camera upload" is that it goes in a specific custom folder which has extra features, only available in that folder.
it's kind of hard to explain for anyone who deosn't use it :) i would recommend trying it out.
a "manual" uplaod to some sort of folder that contains photos: dropbox treats that as a photo folder, but it all still looks just like a file explorer
dropbox "camera upload": now on both desktop browse and mobile app, it renames your uploaded photo files (with date time stamps), and makes them easily browsable by date, and you can easily make "albums" with your photos (those aren't new "folders" but "almbums" only within the camera upload universe).

anyways, the point is that i don't want to miss those cool features; yet i want my videos excluded. meh :)

i really think the only way is:
1) disable connectivity before taking a video.
2) move the video after it's saved.
3) enable phone connectivity again.

it's not actually hard to do :) but still annoying.
