Not really sure this will help, but it's a compilation of much that is available for Nexus 4.
You're correct that it's all subjective. In fact, I ran stock (deodexed) until I wanted other functions. I want certain features with NO fc's. That seems to be the biggest problem I've had with roms (usually installing BANKS gapps solves it as most fc's relate to google processes--maybe just a coincidence, not a programmer by any means). I always do a factory reset but not really a system reset as most roms will do that when they install.
Currently, I'm looking for BT MAP support which XenonHD is supposed to have although it's not working for me with Ford Sync. I'm trying the one suggested above (AOKP jr-mr1) right now as poster indicates car mode. Haven't tried it yet.

Thank you, that was a helpful list....although WOW, there are way more roms then I thought! Also I have no idea what some of the things in their descriptions mean...but thats ok, its definitely a good start. I think I might go with AOKP, since I used an AOKP ICS rom on my Optimus V and quite liked it. But part of me is really curious about PA too....hmmm, it may be coin-flipping time! i may need more than one coin....

I may have a slight bias but I love AOKP. Been using it for the better part of 2 years. I also used jelly belly as well. That was with my GNex though. I'm using AOKP right now because jelly belly has problems with Google Wallet on the N4. Loving AOKP on my N4 right now.:D

So, do you mind if I ask what kernel you're using and/or which one is best with AOKP in your opinion?

Right now I'm not running a custom kernel. I was running lean kernel on my Galaxy Nexus before I got my Nexus 4. I need to do more research about kernels for this phone before I make that determination. Do you have any suggestions?

Nope, not a clue lol. I barely have a grasp on what kernels do...let alone how to figure out if one is better than another.

I've not played about with kernels much, but I've no complaints with the ParanoidAndroid Kernels - Goo.im Downloads - Browsing mako

Fast, battery life is good and they sorted out the colour/brightness issues I was having with stock and CM10.1

I don't have Bluetooth messaging in my car. Basically car mode allows a different launcher while in the vehicle (usually triggered by a connection to a Bluetooth device you define). It uses a few large icons so you can easily find the few apps you would want to launch while driving (navigation, streaming radio, speedometer app, etc). Without car mode your normal launcher comes up every time you press the home button. With car mode this alternate launcher opens when you press the home button while in car mode.
Well thanks. That cleared up a lot for me.

EDIT: Oh, like the Car Home app? I put it on my phone but had a Garmin before built-in Nav so I forgot about it.

A kernel is the interface between the OS and the hardware, it contains all the drivers needed for your phone to work. It controls CPU Speeds, power consumption, screen brightness, wifi strength (sorta) and screen brightness and a tonne of other things. The Faux kernel thread describes a phone as a car and the kernel as an engine.

A good kernel can make huge differences to performance and power consumption.

Make sense?

Makes perfect sense, thank you! So, can I use the PA kernel with another ROM,or is it specifically tied to paranoid android rom? Also, iirc its the kernel that determines what governors you can use with under/over clocking, but so far all of the kernels I've tried only have the 4 or 5 main governors to choose from (interactive, conservative, on demand, performance) and none of the extra ones like what I've seen before on my old phone, specifically smartassV2...am I just missing something, or do these not exist anymore?

Yep, you can use the PA kernel on other ROMS (as long as they're based on 4.2.2, and alwats take a backup before you flash, just in case). It's been my kernel of choice so far. I will get round to trying other stuff, but this has served me well so far.

It's up to the dev what governors he/she includes. I'm sure I read that stuff like Smartass and a load of the newer governors didn't really give much gains over your standard variants, so a lot of devs stopped including them. I'll see if I can find the link.

Thank you much-onward to flash Xylon w/ PA kernel :D I think i've been through 4 roms in 3 days, still can't decide lol.

sooo...despite the fact that I said I was happy with the PA kernel...it won't let me change the minumum CPU speed soooo...I want to try Faux. However, there are like, what, 6 links to kernels on the Faux XDA post....I think I'm supposed to pick this one: Enhanced Stock 4.2.2 Kernel (STOCK + UV + HSIC Fixes + Gamma + Speaker) => http://faux.androidro.ms/mako/mako-j..._stock_422.zip

but I really have no idea. I want to be able to change the CPU speeds and adjust the colors so it looks like the PA kernel makes it look.

Also, it says if you are coming from Franco's kernel to flash the reset kernel...I had Franco's before I switched to PA's, so should I do the reset, or am I ok because I am not coming *directly* from franco's? (I did a full wipe and reflash of everything between Franco kernel and PA kernel)

Sorry for all the questions, I'm trying to learn :D

Edit: Ok, I tried Faux, the one above. In the FauxClock app, i tried to set it up like he said to in the XDA post, but I didn't have all of the options he listed. And no intellidemand. dammit. I didn't want to play around too long, because if it wasn't gonna work, i wanted to refund the app. which i did. for now anyways. I went back to PA kernel. Under the normal settings->performance->processor, I cannot select a lower CPU frequency than 1026. I select a lower one but nothing happens. So, i downloaded the "No-frills CPU control" app, and lo and behold, I can change it just fine (set it at the minimum 384). So i go back thru system settings, and it still says my minimum is 1026. But at the top where it shows the current CPU speeds, i can see it jump to below 1026 several times. So my conclusion is that it is actually set at 384, and something is going on with the rom that the settings won't show/stick in the menu. Any thoughts? Am I missing something here?

The reason it doesn't go below is because of a setting called MPDecision which is enabled by default. My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that MPDecision locks the CPU speed at a minimum of 1026 when the screen is turned on and/or has just been touched so you get the silky smoothness of a UI powered by Project Butter.

You can download Trickster Mod Kernel Settings, head to the specific page, turn off MPDecision and you should be able to set your minimum CPU Speed.

It's a setting I'd forgotten about tbh, but on one of the ROMS I ran over the last week, the default kernel had MPD off by default and the difference in speed I noticed was totally minimal.

I have AOKP with the color from PA. Just use the AOKP ROM with the PA kernel, perfect combo!

I'm just tweaking away and experimenting with all kinds of settings until Key Lime Pie comes out next month. Then i'll flash back to stock for a couple weeks until the custom ROMs get stable mergers of the Android 5.0 code.
