Recommended... Been running this since last week. Stable, fast, very fast, decent battery life (ymmv), very good support network here and over at cyanogen's site.

Set CPU, Power Manager and Process Manager let you set up profiles to manage how your phone uses power based on just about any condition you want. These are available for any rooted N1.

Cyan's wiki also has some info about how to remove some of the system apps that you don't use. I've removed the email client (only use gmail), the exchange email support (personal phone, not for work) and that pain in the arse News & Weather widget. After a reboot, I show that I have over 200 mb of free mem right now.

There are also several OC'ed/UV'ed kernels floating around that should make the battery life even better. Haven't tried any of these yet but will pretty soon... I can't sit still for more than 10 minutes either if you were wondering

Let me know if anyone finds a good overclock/undervolt kernel and uh ... how to install one. I have no idea how to do this, but more battery life is very appealing.

That's because you're running an alpha rom, and if you lookat the read me, Paul discussed the size and how it had to be placed on a different place than with other roms (/system ) wait for the desire kernel to be released, this will all change. If you really want to bounce to iPhone 4.0, I'd keep in mind its not TRUE multitasking like android, it suspends the app and allows SOME operations to continue in the background, and that contrary to what everyone's saying, iPhone 4G hasn't even been hinted at by apple, officially or otherwise. Having said that, if you're not tech savy enough to make android work for you, rooted or officially, perhaps the apple is the ideal place for you.

Don't limit yourself to one forum. Search. Use Google. This info is easily attainable at xda via a bit of patience and Googling.

Patience and google have yielded great results. I always agree those are valuable tools, but I must say that I limit myself to a few forums because I "know" the people in this one and trust their experience and advice. So to rephrase my question ... "Since I trust the good folks at AndroidForums, I would love to hear about some kernels you have used to get better battery life and how you installed them." Thanks in advance for a discussion on the topic.

Okey dokey. Like I said, I can't sit still. I took the plunge and installed an OC'ed/UV'ed kernel.

I am using the PsyQ diet kernel. It can be found by following the link in the second post here: Best Kernel/rom For Battery. - CyanogenMod Forum

NOTE: I have only now installed it and do not have any information on how it performs or its stability. I went with the 'vanilla' version without the AVS wizardry. I am also not comfortable OC'ing this processor so I have left that at 998 Mhz via SetCPU.

I am going to reboot and run it up to a full charge. I will report back later today on my impressions.

Also, the directions for either of the kernel's listed in the forum mentioned are pretty straight forward and I was able to follow them without any issues.

i like cyanogenmod the most, tho 5.0.5.3 battery life was a little disappointing

so i tried Enom's Rom and i must say it is a VERY VERY close second to cyan

so i am perfering Enom to CM5.0.5.3 atm, but i am patiently waiting for 5.0.6 Stable

Tried Modaco custom rom (Stock) didnt like it

only one left to try is Kings Rom, then its onto Desire Ports!!!

i do enjoy the nexus

Modaco ROM was great up until it started acting very unstable and essentially kept bricking... had to wipe and restore a few times... to no avail... had to restore back to a stock Nexus ROM backup i had... now that's what I'm using... and it sucks... might have to try the Cyanogen ROM, but frankly, i'm sick of ****ing with my Nexus just to have it to things it should be able to do out of the box....

thinking it might be time to dump the Nexus altogether and get an Android phone that has SENSE UI as native... ie. the Incredible, or EVO 4G when they are available - which should be soon... or maybe even the Desire if it comes to the US...

I'm VERY happy with the one I'm running. Speeds things up and I'm saving battery. There is a more aggressive version that undervolts to the low 800s but I havent tried that one yet. I will this weekend though.

Do a search on the XDA forum for the Kernel in my sig if interested. Flashing it over is simple. After you've done the radio flash (if you did or wanted to) and after the rom flash you flash this over top of it then you just need to push one file over using cmd prompt. (Directions are in his post as well if you're confused.)

Oh yeah and Cyan's mod is amazing. FAR more stable than stock 2.1 in my opinion with TONS of features I could not live without now.

Check out MIUI. Really stable, fast and neat.

I have an old Nexus 1 Google.

The only problem i have with my actual mod is that the camera sometimes freezes when I push the button to take a photo.

Everything else is perfect.
