Stock Gallery App?...

Does anybody actually use the stock gallery? Aside from all the bells and whistles w/ the S-pen hover view, I've found it to not be that great or organized to use.

I have a ton of pictures on my phone, including cd album art that I don't necessarily want to view in the gallery. I've been trying to find a way to limit which folders are actually shown whenever I open the gallery, but that doesn't seem to be an option.

I have been using QuickPic ever since a member posted on here last year (and it still seems to be the best gallery app I've found), but it'd be nice to at least take advantage of some of the hover functions without having to go through all the clutter of pics that the phone seems to compile itself.

I would definitely use it more often, if there was a way to set which folders show up, but also wanted to hear people's thoughts on it (and maybe I haven't played around with the settings enough to actually know that there's a way to restrict which folders show).

Simply create a blank file and call it .nomedia. Whatever directory this file is placed into will indicated to the Android media scanner that any media files inside this directory should not be indexed and left alone. I got this from...

Other wise there are several apps at google play that will hide files.

The problem with the .nomedia solution is that you can't use it to hide album art, because if you put it in your music folder you'll also hide the music tracks from the music player.

I really can't understand why Google/Samsung don't fix the Gallery app to hide unwanted folders. It's almost like they've never used an Android device in the real world - my Gallery folder is full of stuff that I'm not interested in, stuff that gets installed by other apps. I'd love to use the default Android Gallery app but it's just too hard to find what I want amongst the detritus.

I agree with the issue of album art. It's a right pain in the proverbial.

On previous devices I found it worse when everything was lumped into one. I actually ended up deleting the album art and the Samsung gallery at least made that easy by separating them out into individual picture albums.

Yeah, this is the main reason I love using quickpic. It allows me to select the folders that are displayed. With Samsung's great software integration using the s-pen, it's puzzling why they wouldn't just allow for that type of setting to be added into the gallery app.

I have tried the nomedia trick before, but I ran into issues with it. I also saw another solution online where you could rename a folder you didn't want images shown with a "." before it, but haven't tried that yet for fear that > lI'd have to reset the folder that my music is identified.

It would be nice if Android supported a finer breakdown so you could add .noimages .novideo .nomusic as files to folders.

It's not that Samsung haven't used Android in the real world but that's they jsut reference the library built by android by default and leave it to you to manage or use a 3rd party app if it's not enough.

It's possible to embed images in MP3 files nowadays. The old way (I ripped most of my CDs a VERY long time ago) was to have a separate image file in the folder with the MP3s. I suspect that if all your album art is embedded you won't have any showing up in the gallery app.

However you'll still get all the images on your device, and some apps come with loads of them as part of the install.

Some of my CD's that I ripped are old rips, most definitely. Do you know how to actually embed the image of files that have already been ripped down? This sounds like the option that I'd most want to try.

Yep I have both. The album art that is embedded into the mp3 itself, that does not show up as the actual album art is not a separate file. But I have albums that had no album art so I saved a pic from the web and dropped it inside the folder. All of those, will show up in your gallery. Stock gallery that is. Can't speak on any other gallery apps. All my music is saved on a folder on my SD card by the way.

I'll give that a shot. Does it have a function where I could highlight all the music folders I have on my drive and just embed the album art or would I have to go through each album individually?

I'm not quite sure but I doubt it. I just tinker with a few mp3 by embedding some some with album arts and some with lyrics. I'm was quite surprised that it works. However it is just too much tedious work to go through all my songs.

Okay. That might not be the right solution for me then. I don't necessarily need to use the stock gallery, since I prefer QuickPic, but would be nice at some point to use some of the S-Pen features on a regular basis when it comes to the Gallery pics.

I quit using Gallery because book covers showed up all mixed in with my pictures. Stupid system if you as me. But, I quickly found Quick Pic and have had zero problems with it.

Yeah, I have used QuickPic for a couple years now. I just was hoping to use the stock gallery every now and then, just for S-pen functions...without worrying about clutter of pics I don't really use.
