So I missed my pocket with my phone today, and it fell to the asphalt, with expected results.

I am weighing my options, as I didn't have insurance (over 3 years of smartphone ownership, never dropped my phone before, figured I had it down. :p

Thinking about repairing it myself. Anyone tried this before, with any phone? I love this phone too much to just give up on it, but I can't live with it like it is, even though its still working.

Cases don't protect the screen, they just help to absorb shock from falls.

I've replaced a few screens from previous phones.
I put a Optimus V screen in a Optimus net 10. It worked.

Some cases do, it all depends on the phone itself though. Otterbox defenders for the HTC DNA can do some protection to the screen because of the lip around it, but if the fall is hard enough the shock could shatter the screen.

It is severe in the lower right corner, but in a fairly compact area, there are a few single cracks that extend from that corner across the phone, but none of the cracks extend beyond the middle of the phone, so the upper half of the phone is still perfect. Its definitely useable without too much distraction, and the screen protector keeps me from feeling the edges of the glass (as well as holds together the glass at the bottom right corner).

I have decided to use it as is until one of my other lines comes due for an upgrade in about a month, then attempt to repair it. If it goes south, I will be able to run to the VZW store and get a new phone right away.

If its just the digitizer then it'll be around $40 to fix it.
If you need a new lcd screen too, then it'll be around $130.

A really good case to protect a phone from all drops except face down on a pointy surface is Seidio. They even have models that meet military specs. I had that model on my Tbolt. It was bulky, added weight but it worked. I tend to drop phones due to a medical condition. I need protection. I tried an Otterbox because Verizon sold it when I ordered the phone, but didn't like it. It was difficult to put on and remove.(for me) I didn't like the attached screen protector either. I sent it back and got the Seidio Active and love it. It adds some weight and a little bulk but I've already dropped it on the corners with no damage at all. I also dropped it face down on tile w/o damage. Last and least is the red color matches the phone's red perfectly. Hope this helps.

i replaced the digitizer on my HTC Incredible. Be very very very very careful. I replaced it once without a hitch, then noticed every once in awhile the touch was a little off so I took it apart again to make sure I had everything lined up, I got cocky, in a hurry, and tore the LCD ribbon cable. ended up giving it to my friend who bought a new LCD for 50 bucks and had a sweet phone for 50 bucks. he still uses it.

I just got my case in the mail today. seems like a really nice, two-part case actually.
