I'd love to tell you exactly how much I enjoy karaoke, however that sort of language is not allowed on here - I'll just say that, I feel Japan's revenge for Hiroshima is complete :D

After copious amounts of beer and sake, I once spent possibly (I'm kinda hazy on the detail, but I have a feeling I got carried away) 20 minutes explaining to the CFO of a client in Japan exactly how much I loathed karaoke .. only to be taken directly from the bar to the CFO's private club to - you guessed it - sing karaoke :shot:

For such pleasant and polite people, sometimes the Japanese can have a cruel sense of humour :ahhhhh:

How can anyone not love karaoke?

Happens here as well in China. "I want a quiet night in!"...."Nope Mike, we're going to a KTV....to drink warm weak beer and baijiu, eat popcorn and watermelon, and sing all night long!!" ...and the longest time I've ever spent in a karaoke room, was for a student birthday party in Hangzhou..... nine hours..9pm until 6am the following day....my head was spinning.

Like in Japan with your CFO client. If you wish to do business in China, you have to do karaoke and be able to drink copious amounts of fire-water.

KTV is what we call karaoke suites in China.

This "Japanese revenge" is the main reason why I rather detest My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion.

It's surprisingly easy - I didn't even have to try :D

Yeah - it's the same in Singapore. They're obsessed - when I was in Sing, there were even government-subsidised karaoke classes, I kid you not :) - and, yeah, it's a requirement of lots of business entertainment.

What makes it worse in Sing is that most locals (without whom you would not go to KTV) don't drink alcohol and sometimes it's seen as bad form to drink if the client doesn't. No-one can tell me that karaoke without alcohol is anything other than cruel and usual punishment.

Karaoke without alcohol?!?!...now that's just wrong. Don't think I'd ever want to go through that ordeal....and in four years, don't think I've ever seen a liquor free KTV room in China.

BTW the Sing Chinese Songs site I posted earlier, has certainly helped me to be more sociable and joining in. rather than just sitting there thinking I can't understand or sing these songs. The only English song most of them will sing is that wretched Celine Dion thing.

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go on.
Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on

Near...
Far...
Wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once ......

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!

Strange, because chinese people tend not to have much tolerance for alcohol, apparently because the chinese dealt with dirty water by boiling it to make tea while europeans dealt with it by brewing it into beer which meant we started producing more of an enzyme that helps metabolise alcohol while the chinese didn't.

I remember the first time I had a date with a chinese girl: she had two drinks and - quite literally - slid, unconcious, under the table

On the upside, when alcohol supplies were getting low at home, if you threw a party all the locals would bring alcohol for the ang mo host then drink soft drinks all night. So long as you didn't invite too many gwai lo, you had a great party that finished with your drink stocks replenished :D

It might be because when I'm there, they just assume I want to drink.....which I do of course...just to make the torment(karaoke) more tolerable.

When I first came to China, I was in Zhuhai, Guangdong near Macao. Was with a few other westerner teachers, and some Chinese teachers as well. We used to go on major drinking sessions down in a place called Gong Bei, near the Macao border, drinking at the street bars. And it was usually some of the Chinese who clapped-out first....often just sitting there and completely out of it. But they would never seem to get a hangover though. Some Chinese can really drink, they can do many drinking games, and that is an eye opener.

Think that's the thing, I'm sure some Chinese really can't drink much. Mainland Chinese beer is often very weak, maybe only 2-3%. ...however there's the fire-water...:D On the other hand, it seems Mongolians can certainly drink. And they love KTV just as much.

Very considerate of 'em, too ;)

China's a big and diverse place, I guess ;)

They do have a bit of history - didn't many of the Khans drink themselves to death?

Bit of an extreme way of avoiding KTV, but I guess .. :D

The Japanese are also astounding drinkers. I usually used to go there for a week and they'd always take you out on the Thursday evening. The only time I ever made it into the office on the Friday morning was the one time I had to work through Thursday night.

That sake's dangerous stuff - tastes so nice and innocuous .. then you try to stand up.
