If Verizon Jumps On This......

and lowers their prices a bit, they will trounce the competition.

Verizon CEO Says He Will Consider Dropping Traditional Cell Phone Contracts, Like T-Mobile

And I have to admit even though I love TMO, but I would abandon them in a New York Minute to get on Verizon's network.

This is going have to happen. People starting to realize that paying $100 for a line is a rip-off. With rising gas prices and cost of living many are considering to pay less for cell phone service. I have few friends who are jealous of my $45 a month 4g plan. Meanwhile they are stuck with contracts paying hungers a month.

LOL. Verizon isn't going to lower plan costs for customers. Same plan costs without any subsidized phones. Didn't people want better data plans not too long ago? For some, the ones with wifi everywhere they go in life, they got it. But for the ones that work, commute or travel without access to wifi, the eventual end of unlimited data on Verizon may push customers towards a T-Mobile with their unlimited everything and lower costs. Personally I like and use Verizon, but looking at monthly cost savings and the possible end of unlimited data, T-Mobile might not be that bad. Hopefully one day T-Mobile will have a network close to Verizon.

I'd go with T-Mobile if they had better coverage in my area. Everyone I've talked to has said that T-Mobile's coverage in my area is garbage. It may be cheaper to use T-Mobile but if you can't use the service because you have no signal, cheap doesn't make up for it.

Sadly, I have only two other choices; AT&T and Verizon. Verizon's coverage is worse than T-Mobile in my area so that leaves only AT&T. Sprint isn't even an option in my book because they don't have LTE in my area and their 3G network is horribly overloaded.

I wish T-Mobile all the luck. Maybe in two years when they've had a chance to build out their network I'll look at T-Mobile but not now.

I think that we are all forgetting that a contractless phone still has "terms". If you don't pay for that phone, you still have to pay for it. The only benefit you receive is that ever the 20-24 month period that they break up the full price of the phone your bill drops a little. Sure, I'd love to shave a few bucks off my bill, but in two years when I can... I'm gonna want a new phone!

You can do the same thing right now with VZW. Go buy yourself an iPhone 5, pay your ETF on day one. Now you've essentially saved 150 bucks on the phone AND you can take it to another carrier. If you wanted to you could always make that 150 bucks back, too. If you already have a line of service you can use this process to get a new device and get it over to a plan with unlimited.

You are still stuck with terms that you must agree to. I'm with VZW because I get a discount and because I already had the service. I'd love to be a on a GSM network so that I could get better phones with better support.

VZW won't be lowering their prices anytime soon. They are still migrating people to the Share Everything packages and making boatloads of money. This won't change until more consumers speak with their wallets.

Yup, I'm not holding my breath. Did he provide his contact info so we can call him up and tell him we want this option?

T-mobile now has 4G in DC, so I'm pretty sure I'll be switching when my contract is up in August. Getting tired of 'verizon exclusive' phones with bloatware and other crap.

So essentially this will work on any phone right? This is a genius idea on how to save money on expensive phones. Also, its a big slap in the face to carriers that still offer contracts.
Edit: Didn't know verizon's etf is $350 thought it was $200 like tmobile's, guess this won't save that much money but its still better then full price.

No, it will only work with the iPhone. Verizon phones don't work on any other carriers.

Verizon is still making loads of money while simultaneously added new customers at a higher rate than any other US carrier. So anyone who thinks they are going drop prices along with dropping subsidies is out of their mind! Sure, they'll drop subsidies, but there's no way they are going to drop prices. They'll just see it as another opportunity to increase profits. That's why the Share Everything plans are working out so well for them... they make it seem like you're saving money by sharing but for most people, it actually costs more.

Our family is still on the old plans (my wife and I still have unlimited data). If my family were to switch to the Share Everything plan, we'd be paying more than $50/mo more.

I'm already buying my phones at full retail to keep unlimited data, so it would be a dream come true if they dropped subsidies and lowered the monthly prices. It ain't gonna happen though!
