Help Random Notification Sound

Hello all!

I've had my One about a week now and after going through all the notification settings I CAN NOT seem to get rid of this random notification sound that just happens sporadically. It will play the sound and when I look at my phone for what it is...nothing. It happens about 3 times an hour or so.

I know this is pretty vague but does anyone have any ideas??

No, I don't have anything blacklisted (yet)...but also no, it doesn't match my notification sound.

The NFC notification noise is different than other ones, and I don't think it can be changed. See if having it off keeps the noise from happening. An even better indication that it was NFC is if you keep your phone anywhere near anything that has NFC (some credit cards do now). The sound could be from your phone trying (and failing since those are encrypted) to connect to the NFC in a credit card. But keep us in the loop if the noise keeps happening even with NFC off.

Also, don't give up - we love mysteries. This is a good one!

Oh, you scientific mind type folks!! Gotta love ya! :)

Well, thank you for all of your suggestions...I MAY have found the culprit. After disabling all of the notifications mentioned and STILL hearing that annoying sound...I just happened to be looking at my phone when the sound happened and noticed the refresh bars appeared. So, I went into my settings and looked around and found the "sync all" setting. I disabled auto sync and I haven't heard the sound since. I'm not 100% positive yet but I haven't heard the sound in a while. If I continue NOT to hear it, I'm going to turn the sync on again and listen for it to make sure.

THANKS FOR BEING HERE GUYS!!!

I quite enjoyed the mystery. When I was searching the device last night for what could be causing your invisible notifications, I ran across one option that might help you out.

My only other guess was going to be Google Talk. I recall someone in the past having phantom G-Chats happening in the background.

If you check in the Sound settings, there is a check box for disabling notifications for sync or newly refreshed feeds (something like that - don't have my phone with me). This is a new option in Sense 5 if I'm not mistaken. I think it was mostly added for BlinkFeed updates.

For the past three days, I've noticed my phone making a notification sound but then there's no notification text in the status bar. It seems to make it at random times also. I have notifications turned off in Gmail, which is the only email client I have installed. I also checked notification settings in the calendar and tasks apps, along with some of the other apps I use frequently. Has anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas?

Since I just started noticing it a few days ago, I thought I would also try to check to see what apps I had recently updated (I haven't downloaded any new ones recently) to see if something changed in an update.

How bizarre that i have exactly the same phone and have started noticing this issue over the last few days too. I have gone through every app of mine and made sure every notification sound is turned off where applicable. For those apps where I want a notification sound I have changed them all to be different and made sure that none of them are using either the current notification sound or my old previous default one.

The phantom notification sound is my old default notification sound that is now no longer being used for any apps. I've tried clearing the data and cache for each too, to no avail.

I'm still troubleshooting and i'll post up if I get a result.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having the problem. This Saturday was the first day I noticed it, and the fact that it seems to have started for both of us around the same time definitely makes me think whatever is causing it is the same for both our phones. I haven't received any over the air O/S updates that I know of, and I haven't changed any settings, which leads me to believe it's an app that is causing it. I wonder if there's a bug on a recently updated app that causes the notification sound to play but doesn't show an actual notification (and isn't tied to the notification settings within the app itself).

The problem is I usually update apps when I received the Google Play notification, so I can't remember which apps have had updates recently and I couldn't find a way to sort my apps in Play to show recently updated. If it is an app bug, hopefully the maker will figure it out and fix it. Keep me posted on what you find out and I'll do the same.

something else to consider.. gmail has created new groups in its email.. promotion, social and such..

i get random notifications as well..

now.. maybe.. just maybe.. you could be getting a sound notification, but not new email notification.. i know i get no notification when i get social email..

On mine I have the new groups turned off so I only have the "Inbox" group. I just double-checked to make sure they were still disabled and they were. Thank you for the suggestion though.

I know this sounds like a pain, but one solution is the process of elimination. However before removing apps I would suggest those who have this issue coordinate with each other, listing their carrier, if they are rooted, and a list of all the apps they have installed (not stock apps) and see if there is a common app that may be causing the issue.

I only get this sound once a day at worst and i've not had it today. i've changed all my notification tones to be different and changed my default tone.

I'll monitor it for a few days and when I have time over the weekend, if the issue hasn't resolved, i'll try the suggestions in the two posts above. thanks chaps, much appreciated.

WOW! As I was writing that, the tone came through. it is my old default tone, not now used by any apps at all... FFS

EDIT: it was only the first half of the tone though, not the full tone (Magnolia, for those that know it)
