Root S-OFF, root, & Fix Everything All-in-One!

It seems a lot more complicated than this and I don't have any type of warranty except for the one year you get from HTC I'd rather not risk it, thanks for the help

Except VM will exchange your phone rather than repair it and my understanding is that they are not very picky about what the problem is or the state of the phone since it's in their interest for you to have a working phone. But I understand your reservations about the bricking method and prefer the wire trick myself.

I don't have warranty with vm and It's not even activated (I have a different phone activated) so I don't think I can get it switched out, thanks for all the help though :)
OK. So this was just so you could get S-OFF to flash ROM's that require it on a phone you're not using? In that case, I agree that it's probably not worth the bother.

THANK YOU Remanifest and everyone who had a hand in putting this together. I rooted a few months ago but the thought of jamming a paperclip in my phone scared me away from S-off. After reading through this guide I was put at ease and I decided to go for it.

I only had one hitch so I starting reading through all the post to see where I screwed up. I was stuck in the S-off JuopunutBear "arrow screen". Turns out I missed one piece of the fine print "uninstall HTC Sync". I was convinced it was my Windows 7 64bit drivers but when I went back and read the guide step by step I realized I missed that one.

Uninstalled HTC Sync - rebooted and bam! perfection!

Now I can really start loving my Evo,

Regards,
FB :D

Remanifest, could you please help me? When I am in hboot and plug the USB in. The buttons on HBOOT stop working and I cannot flash anything. I was orignially rooted with S-On, then unrooted with RUU, then downloaded the OTA and started with your guide. I found that if I ran the commands right after I plugged the USB in, it would work, but I can only get as far as 'sending (6214kb) with the recovery. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yeah. I figured it out. The USB port I was using was old and wobbly, which turned out to be the issue. I then moved everything over to my newer desktop, and I got past that point. Although, during the control bear phase, I wiped my sd card and almost bricked the phone. I then had to RUU back to stock (except i'm relocked and not locked).

Edit: While I figured out that you aren't supposed to do the trick until prompted, I'm still having issues. After I do the wire trick, my phone vibrates a few times, the USB connection to my pc goes in and out, and the phone eventually just restarts with the SD card wiped and the exe saying "The Bear Fell Over". I've never been especially good with hardware, so it is no suprise to me that this is causing problems. Do you know what would make the phone restart like that?

Thanks again

The ControlBear process. When it prompts you, follow the instructions as written in the post. You're touching briefly on the first beat of the metronome, then pressing and holding on the 2nd beat, until you see what the original post tells you to look out for on the computer screen. Don't worry about the phone's screen - it should be turned over flat on the desk/your lap/wherever until you're done with the wire trick.

I've followed your guide and everything works fine, thanks by the way. Now I want to try a different prl. Every prl guide I read says to use QPST and install HTC Diag Drivers to find the correct port. I can't seem to install the HTC Diag Drivers drivers so QPST doesn't see my phone. I'm trying to follow this guide.

If you're using Windows 7 or below, these drivers will work for you. If you're on Windows 8, you may try them, but I don't know if they'll work. Simply right-click on the .inf file for your architecture and choose install. From there, the QPST program should see your phone. You will need to be in a stock-based ROM (like Harmonia) for this to work. x86 is 32-bit Windows, and x64 is 64-bit Windows.

There's a guide on XDA Developers for increasing the phone's volume using QPST - the procedure to get into QPST will be the same, but updating PRL from QPST is foreign to me, so maybe someone else can pitch in with advice on that.

Great thanks. I managed to get the drivers to work by uninstalling the HTCDriver4.1.0.001 driver and turning off usb debugging. I am on Harmonia as your guide suggested.

Thanks for the guide. I want to take a slightly different path with my S-OFF so I want to do a sanity check before I move on.

Premise: How do I get the latest updates while keeping the stock ROM, in the context of this guide?

I want to stick with the stock ROM because every custom ROM I have tried has this bug:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36549309#post36549309

As far as I can tell the only thing I need to do different with this guide is install this rom during "Step Three - rooting your phone":

http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-a...oted-deodexed-everything-should-work-now.html

I'm a little confused because Step 3 is not technically rooting your phone, it's just installing a custom ROM. I presume the actual root happened during step 2?

I will be attempting this using an EVO V S-ON with rooted, stock ROM with Nov OTA (but not March) and using TWRP (I'm fine switching to 4EXT, just want to be clear about what I already have).

Yes, that's fine, you can choose any rom you want so long as your hboot version can boot the rom. You should be fine in this case.

Actually that is rooting the phone. Basically putting superuser on your phone is what roots it and allows it to grant root permissions. You can either do this by flashing superuser alone which would root your current stock setup, or you can flash a rooted rom that already includes superuser.

I will be attempting this using an EVO V with rooted, stock ROM with Nov OTA (but not March) and using TWRP (I'm fine switching to 4EXT, just want to be clear about what I already have).
Good luck :)

Usually people start with twrp recovery while rooting as it's easily available and then switch over to 4ext. But alas here you go ^_^

Okay, so I've been working on this for about 2 days now with no luck.

I have an HTC EVO 3d from Virgin Mobile. I ran a rooting process yesterday before seeing this guide which unlocked the phone and I see that I'm at HBOOT 1.58 (unsure what that means) I've gotten almost all of the first portion of this guide (relocking the phone etc) before the S-OFF step and now the RUU won't update because it says its the wrong version? Is this true? It's the one Remanifest said to download for Virgin.

Sooo frustrated, can anyone help??

Sorry I didn't see this! Hope I can help you out now :)

I take it you're still stuck in a bootloop? The problem with being on 1.58.0000 is that no RUU exists for that version of your bootloader.

But, I do have some ideas on what may help you fix this problem:

If you are on Windows, download this file, and double-click it to open it. Merge the changes to your registry. This will add an entry to your elevated right-click menu, so that you may open a command window in a specific folder as an Administrator. This is important, please don't skip it.

  • Extract the shooter-root-soff-fix file to your C:\ drive on windows, or to your home directory on Linux. Do not make a new folder, just extract. If you need a zip application, my preferred zip application on Windows is PeaZip. It is based on 7zip, and handles almost any archive you can imagine.
Windows: Press the WINDOWS KEY+R, and type
Code:
C:\shooter-root-soff-fix
  • Hold down the shift key on your keyboard, and right-click on the S-OFF folder, then select "Open command window here as Administrator" (it will have a shield icon next to it).
Now, issue the following commands, one after another:

  • fastboot erase cache

  • fastboot erase boot

  • fastboot erase system -w

  • fastboot erase userdata -w

  • fastboot boot recovery.img
4EXT will give you some warning. Ignore it and press the check mark.

  • From 4EXT, go to the wipe | format menu, and select format all partitions (except sdcard). Confirm your selection

  • Download and install this ROM. You may connect your phone to the computer by choosing toggle usb storage. Once it's on your SD Card, you may choose install from sdcard and then choose zip from sdcard to pick the ROM file.

  • Once you've got it installed, go into the power menu and reboot. 4EXT will give you some other warning. Ignore it, it's normal.

Your phone should be working now - if you want S-OFF (highly recommended), you may run ControlBear.exe from the command prompt & follow the rest of the guide from there!

Just realized I have the same issue but the files you mentioned aren't available - can you help???

Unfortunately you can't use the RUU because you have taken the March OTA update. The best you can do is be on the stock rom as no RUU is available for you. See links below.

Download the appropriate file for your computer: (Windows/md5sum) or (Linux/md5sum). Verify the md5sum!
