Help Widgets on lockscreen WITH PIN??

I'm getting really confused and annoying at the same time.

I have the S3 and the S4 next to me right now.

Why can my S3 have apps on the lock screen with a PIN but the S4 cannot have any apps or widgets with the PIN? I can only have widgets and apps on the lock screen when it's only swipe. How pointless.

(if you're going to go down the security arguement route then..if that was the case why can I still have apps on the S3 and still be prompted for a PIN before anything happens with the app?)

I just want to be able to have widgets/apps on my lock screen and then swipe and be asked for my PIN. Is that really much to ask?

Is this by design? I have done various searches on the topic and people have mixed answers. Anyone shed on light on this? (No I do not want to buy widget locker either....):p

Much appreciated.

My guess is that it's typical sloppy programming by the manufacturer (Samsung). I have found there is little consistency in Android as a general rule and that many aspects of the various version of Android (that have been warped by the phone manufacturers) lack any vision or overall design concept.

Which is why I like to root because many of the ROMs are better thought out than the stock ROMs.

So, the answer to your question is that there really isn't any rational or logical reason.

That was such a nice feature though. It made the lock screen look really nice and practical.

I really hope Samsung change this asap...I don't want to root and use a custom ROM for a few reasons:

Warranty
They're not always stable and can be buggy
I actually like Sammy's features they have added

I just hope they fix it so you can have widgets and apps on the lock screen even with a PIN as it's just stupid how it stands.

Android 4.2 introduces widget-support in the lock screen. If Samsung S3 had this, I guess it was because Samsung had developed their own lock screen?

What version of Android is S4 running?

In any case, third party lock screens are always an option, like this one.

Not that I'm cheap but it was functional and practical on the S3 so not sure why when going up an Android version it's no longer available, it's like a step backwards. Can't be that hard to make it so when you swipe on a application it asks for your PIN and be able to show Widgets on the lock screen as a stock feature.. :(

It is by design but I have no idea why. My guess is that once you are in an app (which would not have required entering the PIN) you can easily get to other apps and therefore bypass the security.

It does say specifically in the manual that you cannot have a PIN lock and widgets on the lock screen.
I know mate, my argument is that you don't get access to the app without entering your PIN anyway on the S3 so surely that's sufficient security. You cannot go any further without putting your PIN in. Just seems like they have ruined a perfectly nice feature tbh

My son has an S3 but I've never used it so I didn't know that.

If you have to enter the PIN, what's the point? If I enter my PIN I am at my home screen with shortcuts to the important apps anyway. I don't see what use it would be if you have to enter the PIN anyway. Am I missing something?

Two main reasons for me:

When swiping on...lets say.. the Facebook app (on the lockscreen) you then are asked for the PIN. Once you have put your PIN in Facebook automatically loads straight away. Same for any shortcut you put on the lock screen and the same for a text message. It's easier, quicker and looks nicer too.

It looks much nicer IMO! On the S4 when you look at your lock screen it's just a big numberpad...it's not a clean look. It looks much better with just the lock icon, clock widget and your favourite apps on the bottom of the lock screen.
