Player Pro for me, looks great and is easy to use.
1 problem i had was that my playlists kept disappearing but that hasn't happened for months now. Still never figured out why it was happening but i don't think it was Player Pro, probably my fault.

I appreciate these suggestions. I've been using the stock player which seems fine but there are some features I would like. I listen to a lot of seminars and voice audio stuff, too, and I would like to pause in the middle of 1.5 hour presentation and be able to pick it back up at the same place 6, 12 even 24 hours later (not after playing other stuff in between, though that would be cool!) The stock one won't hold it that long.
Also would like to be able to have a lock screen interface.

I know poweramp does that. I would think every player would allow that. Seems like a standard function.

I know Player Pro holds the last place of the last played thing for a long time and it has a cool lock screen interface mate.
Shame more of these devs don't give a 1 to 2 day trial so people can decide whether it's for them or not.
Don't quote me on this but....i think play store gives you 15 mins to decide if you want your money back or not, 15 mins isn't a lot of time i know but it's better than nothing to check them out. Like i say i'm not 100% on this so i would wait to see if someone else can clarify it for you mate

If you refund within 15 minutes, you don't need to explain why. However, if it's after 15 minutes but within 2 days, you would have to report it and then write an explaination.

There is a 10 day PlayerPro trial! I've just checked it out. Done!I know Player Pro holds the last place of the last played thing for a long time and it has a cool lock screen interface mate.

Id like the same thing Master Cylinder is after. I listen to podcasts and id like to be able to put the equivalent of a "bookmark" at a point in a podcast that the player would remember even after rebooting, playing something else etc

I use ZPlayer - it's pretty close to perfect for me - I'd like a better album art/tag management system, and it can't be set as the default video player (yet) but I don't really watch a lot of videos on my phone, so that's not a major issue for me.

Well I'll be jiggered! ProPlayer has got some bugs on my stock rooted S3.

The Lock Screen widget is flaky. If you wake er up with the Power button, all is well. If you wake er with the Home button, all is not. It unlocks the phone! The Lock Screen with widget shows up very briefly, but immediately disappears to whatever the previous Home Screen was.
There has been complaints from other S3 users about this since the 4.1.2 update, but there is no reference on ProPlayer's website, but some discussion on it in the forum, with no solutions presented. People without stock ROMs seem to be immune. Who knows, maybe I'll run into this on all of them.
Also, you can't get straight to the full screen player from the Home Screen widget - it's a 2 step process. You can in the Stock one if you press the Home button while your in full screen. More of a niggle perhaps.
On both of these, with the Home Screen widget you cannot fast forward through your file with the forward and back button like you can in the full screen player, or like the PlayerPro Lock Screen widget (as long as you get it from the Power button!) Maybe none of them will do that since it kicks off the Home Screen Edit mode.
Dang! Using my phone in my car dock, it's much easier to wake the screen with the Home button than with the Power button - the endlessly awkward location of the Volume Control button asserts itself again! (Samsung seems to like this because it continues on the S4, or they're just not willing to admit a mistake ...)
