GMail Update -- Venting

Brokentablet

I assume many other users have already seen this as well, but it appears that Google has once again updated the tablet GMail app, which by the way I was very comfortable with. Now I see all these multiple colored boxes next to each message. They appear to indicate alphabetical names and priority. In addition I had to hunt to find my label list (which was always visible to the left side of the display) to look at other labels (family, friends, etc). I did not find an option to opt out or to keep the previous appearance.

In addition it seems you now have to go to the preferences selector (3 vertical dots) on the top right of a message to delete the message. The "trash can" option in the menu icons has disappeared.

I suspect there are more surprises I haven't yet discovered.

Awhile back, with another update, I was also surprised to find that embedded images from senders will no longer appear in the body of the message and only show as attachments. (In the body they appear as the box outline with a small colored square). Is this what everyone else sees?

Maybe it's time for some feedback on the app. Maybe someone other than the federal government will be watching and listening!!!

Things constantly change and evolve. People constantly resist the change, then get used to it, then complain when it's changed from that. Gmail isn't my primary email anymore but from my use of the Gmail update (which didn't just come to tablets) I didn't have any issues with it. I actually like it.

The multi-colored boxes with the letters are what you get if there's no image for the sender.

If you go into settings, then general settings, you can turn off Sender image and its back to normal. You can also choose to show both archive and delete (or just one of the two).

should have investigated myself lol, but thanks, much better now.

Also can swipe to delete. ;)

You can put the delete function icon back on by going into the general settings tab

Open your Gmail, then hit settings, then go to General Settings, then hit the archive and delete action tab, then check the show Archive and delete, or just the delete function and your good to go ;)

The beauty of the forum!! Someone else usually knows the answer.

Is there something I missed to show the images in the message body, or is that just no available now?? Previously, I do recall when getting a first message from a sender and it asked "Show images from this Sender", then "Always show images from this sender".

Thanks for the input.

Things constantly change and evolve.

There is evolution and there's change just for the sake of change; the latest Gmail update is the latter, IMO.

The text visibility is poorer (lower contrast) just like the similar "change for the sake of change" in the recent Play Store app, and it's now missing the functionality of the permanent labels list that I use a lot. This is not evolution.

Of course I had a backup to allow me to easily undo the change, but now I'll need to take action to isolate Gmail so it no longer appears in the Play Store updates list and gives me back the handy "update all" functionality. Unfortunately this is not as easy to do as it used to be, but it's not difficult either - just fiddly :-(

Personal preference and usage. Can't please everyone. I also strongly disagree regarding the Play store. New version remembers all previously installed apps (not just purchases) and makes it easier to reinstall them all. If they changed it to suit your needs guaranteed someone else would complain.

Anyhow, anyone know if there's a way to delete new mail from the notification shade in JB like it let's you archive and reply?

1. So anyone know what determines the color of a contact's letter tile (that appears when there's no pic saved for the contact)? It seems to be completely random.

2. Bug still remains that contacts pictures don't appear if the contact's email address in your contacts has characters in a different case to what was sent in an incoming email. You'd think Google of all people would know email addresses are not supposed to be case sensitive :-(

i.e. If a mail is sent from you@gmail.com it won't show your picture if you're in my contacts as You@gmail.com

The same thing applies to encryption on synced data. If you log into a device using some slight casing variant (like your example above) you'll get a complaint asking for a non-existent passphrase to allow you to continue, rather than a simple request to check that the email address has the same case as the on other device.

This is very bad practice; email addresses should always be normalised to lower (or upper) case for comparison, the as-entered original preserved only for display purposes. Common sense should have told Google that accepting the case-variant email/password pairs for sign-in but not for sync (or now for sender images) was not a smart bit of programming.

I have discovered a bug in the latest update of Gmail. It happens on both my Nexus 7 and my Incredible 4G. On an email I sent to several people containing a photo, the graphic bars representing the distribution list of each message overlay the photo so you cannot see it. You can pinch/zoom to enlarge/shrink the email message behind the headers, but they continue to obscure some of the content. Anyone else experience this?

As far as I can tell, the Android Gmail app can't show embedded inline images. Seems like a simple and essential feature, but help and chat boards are full of comments and questions about it. If you open Gmail in a tablet's browser, you can see embedded pictures in messages, just not in the Gmail app.

Great tip about the delete button -- I was really missing that.
