Battery saving apps?

I'm not sure why people are bashing automation and convenience. "Yeah, you can just do that manually." Well, of course. But why should I? In fact, that's why I love Tasker, because it automates things for me instead of my having to do things manually.

Just to clarify a few points here:
  • Juice Defender is not a task killer. It turns off data when your screen is off, and then turns the data back on when your screen turns on.
  • If you are constantly turning your screen on and off all the time, the battery savings will be non-existent. In fact, using something like Juice Defender may actually hurt your battery life with that usage pattern. If, however, you use your phone for a short stretch of time, and then you leave the screen off for a long stretch of time, you'll see major battery savings because that whole time your screen is off, your data is also off.
  • Data toggling can be a tricky thing. I noticed that Juice Defender was great on my MyTouch 4G, which could successfully toggle data on and off with no problems. However, on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus, data toggling was a bit finicky. Sometimes data would come on. Sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes I'd have to switch to airplane mode and back for data to come back on again successfully. Your mileage may vary.
  • As someone else noted, Juice Defender hasn't been updated on a long time. It still performs the same basic function (turn data off when screen is off, and turn data on when screen is on), but since development has stopped, if new bugs arise because of new device configurations or new versions of Android, no one is going to fix those.

Who's bashing all these? Everyone have a different opinion and different taste for things. If you think it's good, then it's good. But that doesn't mean that everyone has the same mindset as you. Don't expect everyone to have the same thinking as you.

has anyone had issues with their phone shutting off when opening "Juice Defender" in your pull down notifications?

once every 4-5 times, with Juice Defender already running in the background, I'd either intentionally or unintentionally open the app in the pull down notifications and my phone would immediately restart itself. this hasn't happened with any other of my applications.

I have noticed Juice Defender saves on my battery & data usage (especially compared to when I just recently deactivated it for a day and my phone's battery was getting hotter and dying much more quickly)

I have a Droid Razr MAXX HD

Really good point. if something works for you, whether its a placebo or not, it works

I used Juice Defender back when I had my Sammy Admire (Gingerbread), and it made my battery last longer while I was in school. Prior to having the app, I'd come to school with 90%, but by 2.30, I'd have 32% left (data off). With Juice Defender, I'd come out of school with at least 60% (which isn't great, but it is better than 32%).

I haven't tried it or any other battery saver apps on my ICS device, I don't see the need for it anymore, when you can just manual toggle all the settings.

I found Juice Defender very slow in turning my connection back on, so quite annoying for location apps like foursquare, maps, etc. It will save battery life when not using your phone though.

I currently have Easy Battery Saver installed. it has 5 modes. Same problem as above with JD, so I would keep it in "Normal Mode" and switch it "Super Power Saving Mode" when I want it to work. So I'm basically manually toggling anyway.

With all the added Japanese crap (osaifu keitai, one-seg tv, etc.) my DoCoMo SG3 is a nightmare for battery life anyway. As they told me at the DoCoMo shop: "the best way to save battery life is to not use your phone!"

I tried in the past green power, juice defender but i don't think they are very useful.

I kept only battery defender that disables automatically with one click some phone functions from midnight to 7 a.m (it has also other functions but i don't use them).Perhaps the only app that helps me saving battery is lightsaver. It sets the screen light being much more flexible than the default settings (at least 50% of battery is drained from the display as i know).
