I decided to give this new alternate keyboard a try: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.exideas.mekb&feature=search_result#?t=W10.
This keyboard does not use a QWERTY layout. It has 9 large keys for the letters and symbols. To type a letter, you either press and release the key, or press the key and drag your touch in one of the 4 cardinal or 4 diagonal direction. The advantage is that you will rarely ever type the wrong character because the keys are so large. Most QWERTY keyboards have keys that are close together, especially in portrait orientation, that it is easy to accidentally type the wrong character. I find when using this keyboard, I rarely every type the wrong character by accident.
Since the keyboard is so different and typing requires a tap or tap+drag, it will take some time to get used to it. I just started using it yesterday. My error rate is very low, but as I have not had much time to get use to it, I am still typing rather slowly. I am going to give it 3 to 4 weeks to get used to this keyboard. I am hoping that in the long term, this keyboard will eventually save me time because of its low error rate.
