OTG Cable?

Hi guys,
I am going on a plane trip with my kids on Tuesday. I am trying to be able to download movies to a Free Agent external hard drive and play them to my Nexus 10.
I think I need to purchase an app called Nexus Media Importer and buy an OTG cable. The OTG cable looks like the one that came with the Nexus 10. Am I crazy?

On the right path?

Way off?

Someone point me in the right direction please.

You are on the right lines ... The otg cable (micro usb to female usb so not what came with the nexus) and a big thumb drive are ideal. You have to be careful with external hdds as they need more power to run and the nexus may not provide enough. Finally yes the nexus media importer is great and the last piece of the puzzle to watch lots of movies.

Thanks Duncs,

So if I download Nexus Media importer and get an OTG cable can I purchase a movie through Google Play and download it directly to a thumb drive? Do I need MX player or anything?

MX player is always a good option as it seems to play most things, no idea about downloading movies from Google Play however, as a guess i would imagine you would have to download the movie from a pc to get it to the thumb drive. I dont know myself where its stored in the phone if you pin it from Play and am not sure that a file browser will let you move the file, im sure someone else around here can answer that though.

How are you downloading these movies?

If you're saving them to an external location, just use a flash drive. You don't need that nexus media importer or w/e it was you mentioned previously. The flash drive will work best with the OTG cable. Yes, you will need MX Player or BS Player in order to play the wide range of formats.

Actually you do need the nexus media importer if you have a non rooted nexus device, if you just plug in the usb stick to the otg cable the nexus will not do anything without the app installed.

That is kind of the problem. I am not downloading the movies yet. I have read that I need a DVD Ripper of some sort. Can someone walk me through the process of putting a DVD into my PC and getting it onto the thumb drive without spending another 50 bucks?
