Wireless charging

I purchased the Samsung back cover (using the 50% off), and am using it with the Nokia Qi charger. Yes, it is slower, but really not as slow as I had thought. I realize it charges "only" up to 750ma (while the Samsung USB charger can charge up to 2A) - but here's what I found:

I usually charge my phone at about 8pm, when the battery is at about 40% or so. Before I got the wireless charger, I would use the Samsung charger, and by about 9:45 or so, it would be at 100% - I would disconnect it from the charger, and disable data connectivity entirely till morning.

With the wireless charger, I follow the same process - but instead of the phone being at 100% at about 9:45pm, it now takes till 10:10pm or so - an extra 25 minutes. I was honestly expecting it to take 5-6 hours, so I was pleasantly surprised to see this.

The phone does feel warm when I pick it off the charger, but not too hot. After having trouble with the USB port on my EVO 4G (before my previous GNex), I'll use this wireless charger to avoid that potential issue in the future :)

Edit: Wanted to point out that the Samsung charging back actually makes contact at two places (unlike the 3rd party ones that only make contact on one side) - not sure if that makes a difference in how fast it charges

The 2.0 Amp stock charger is really about 1.6 Amp effective. Did you not view my pics and descriptions here?

I use wireless charging on my S4 and I have tried several different receivers, as well as the Samsung wireless charging cover. If you want to use the Samsung cover, there is a case on Amazon called Diztronic that will fit over it. It's a matte black, soft TPU case.

There's also 2 main types of receiver inserts: The white ones are about 1.6mm thick, and you will notice the bulge when installed. There's also a black one that is only 0.6mm thick and makes practically no bulge. You can distinguish it because it has the microprocessor on the tongue in between the connector pins and the main body where the charging coil is at.

To eliminate the annoying turning on and off of the phone screen while it's trickle charging, simply enable the dock clock function on the phone, enable the full screen mode, and it will solve that problem.

To activate the dock clock app:
> go to the apps drawer and tap on the clock icon.
> On the top tabs (where it shows Alarm/World Clock/Stopwatch/Timer), swipe it to your left and it will reveal an additional tab for the Desk Clock.
>Once you tap on it, it will reveal the dock clock.
> Tap on the bottom right on your phone (the menu soft key) and you can go into the app settings where you can show/hide the calendar, weather and dock settings.
> If you tap on the "full screen" icon in the upper right, it will go into the screen saver mode. From there you can go into settings again and configure additional options like hide status bar, wallpaper, weather, etc.

The key is to enable the "screen saver" or full screen mode. Otherwise, if an email, text or other notification comes in, it will turn off the dock clock. What I did, is I made an NFC tag that I stuck on my charging plate is that when I place my phone on it, it activates the dock clock. Then I just tap on the full screen icon and it's set for the night.

If you find that the screen is too bright, there's an app called screen filter that dims the screen to your liking. I am using it simultaneously on my NFC tag.

Well, you learn something everyday. Thanks for solving that annoying turning on issue!

I actually did (thank you for posting those BTW) - and even with that, 1.6A vs 640mA - Samsung USB is more than double the current of the Qi, so I was surprised to see that charging time wasn't proportionally faster.

Oh well, it is working well (better than I had hoped) :)

Have you found cases that fit ok with the OEM inductive back?

My $3 ($0.50 + $2.50 shipping) Boxwave case still fits!
Amazon.com: BoxWave Arctic Frost Samsung Galaxy S4 (S IV, SIV) Crystal Slip - Colorful Slim Fit Frosted Samsung Galaxy S4 TPU Gel Skin Case for Durable Anti-Slip Protection (Frosted Clear): Cell Phones & Accessories

It is tight of course, but still covers the phone.
I am not using it though - instead, just threw a XtremeGuard screen protector back on the back side (and Zagg on the front from earlier), and am using it 'naked'.

I didn't like the bulk that the case added

I just received the shipping email for my cover back from Samsung. I know I already have a case that won't fit anymore, but I'm not a fan of cases to begin with. The only reason why I use a case is to protect the protruding camera on the back. The new back cover does that. I'm just hoping it works with my Nexus Orb that I already own. Which it should.

The one from fasttech, takes 2 weeks to get it in. Basically equiv of a 1.0A charger directly connected.

So here's some pics using the fasttech cheap one:

N7 charger using the OEM 2.0A charger/cable:

On the OEM 2.0A charger:

LMK if you have any questions!

What screen or app is that you're using there? I've looked for a similar screen on my S4 but I'm not finding one. Not sure if I don't know where to look, or if it's the difference between the two devices, or if you're using a special app. :)

Thanks.

How's the Samsung unit working for you? Got my shipping confirmation today.

How much girth does it add to the back of the phone?
