Help Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide

It sometimes tells you the CSC code it is expecting when you connect to Kies... but not always. I wouldn't bother too much about the original CSC code as you can always use Odin to update and I'm guessing that this is not a new phone with a 2 year warranty.

I don't think Kies is giving me any info regarding CSC...
The guy who updated for me used Odin (I don't think he cosidered CSC at all, he pretty much plugged it in straight away!)

* I forgot to mention, the phone has turned off twice now, unexpectedly.

The phone is new, it arrived in a sealed box.

Thanks!

New to Android and new to the forum. So thank yo upfront.

I just purchased an unbranded, unlocked, international S2 GT-i9100 on Amazon. It is loaded with 2.3.5 Gingerbread. Like the phone and right price, too. I plan to use it overseas and thus did not want a carrier locked phone.
PDA: i9100xxKi3
Product code: not active
CSC: unknown

I have not un-rooted the phone. It is new and clean without any data or apps, etc. to save.

Made in Korea, shipped from China.

I could not get Kies to connect to the phone so after multiple tries and variations including usb port and cable changes, etc., I gave up and uninstalled Kies. Then downloaded Odin, which was fine and recognized the phone on Com5.

Now my question: I uploaded Jelly Bean unbranded (do not remember which one)and loaded with odin.
There was no problem in the doing the download. Very smooth. However, after reboot phone was completely stuck in the boot logo loop. Could get it to download and recovery, but that was all. I did a soft reboot. No luck. Did a Hard reset, wipe and clean and repartition and and no luck. Still stuck in loop.

Re-loaded Samsung drivers, again without luck.

So I re-installed Gingerbread and everything worked fine again. Phone came back to life.

Again I tried with Unbranded Nordic version i9100XWLSJ. Same story, stuck in boot loop with access to download and also recovery.

Since this is and unbranded phone is that the problem? Any suggestions?
I truly would like to update to Jelly Bean since Gingerbread is ,well gingerbread. Is it a kernal issue?

I am thinking of trying with the Australian unbranded, but I assume it ill be the same.

Hi and thanks in advance. I have a galaxy i9100 which shows the following information: PDA: i9100xwlsd - Phone i9100xxls8 - Csc i9100vnzls9. I installed via odin Android version 4.1.2 which made the phone work really well except that it kept dropping service and signal strength. I replaced the sim which did seem to help but did not fix the problem totally. I also notice that the GPS will not find any satellites and just keeps searching for as long as I would let it. I have read various threads and it appears that this may be a modem problem? I have found that Vodafone NZ has released a modem which is i9100xxls9? Should I flash the modem file only in Odin and do you really think this would fix the problem. Any help gratefully received.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums mjfletch! :)

You are on the LSD firmware for Europe, (the latest is LSW), and therefore the firmware,s modem may well not be compatible with Vodafone NZ who I believe require the, "T", modem.

If you are rooted, this is a simple process, as described, here...

Modems - Dummies Guide

Other than that, you can download and flash, via Odin, the latest firmware for the GT-i9100T variant.

Hello ash tree!

Two suggestions...

1. Do a Factory Reset prior to flashing the new firmware.

2. If stuck on a boot loop, you should try wiping the cache in Recovery mode.

Hi ironass, just wanted to say that your guide is really helpful. But as a complete newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff, I've still got a ton of questions to ask before I can semi-confidently install jelly bean. Hope you don't mind...

I bought my phone on ebay from somewhere in China (slightly shady seller, but great price) so I was expecting update issues from the get-go. It currently runs on v2.3.5, connected to Vodafone Australia. My phone's details are:

PDA: I9100XXKI3
CSC: I9100OXAKI3

The CSC code doesn't match anything on SamMobile (for jelly bean anyway) so I was wondering which CSC code's firmware would be best to flash it with? Would any of them do, or should I stick as close to my CSC code as possible?

I'm guessing that my current CSC is not the original one since OXA should be able to update via Kies (according to section #2.1). Do you advise re-setting it back to its original one and trying to update that CSC code instead, or should I stick with OXA and let it run its course?

Kind of regretting not buying the Nexus 4 instead. =/

Hello and welcome to Android Forums smen! :)

I am always wary of phones that are from the web and my first reaction is to ask the following questions of myself before replying...

1. Is it a clone phone? Doubtful in this case as it is running, albeit very old, stock Gingerbread firmware.

2. Is the phone an SGS2 variant, for say China, that has had its CSC code and firmware changed to get around certain restrictions such as Play Store. Possibly, but we can never be sure.

If you are on Vodafone Australia, you will need to flash a, "T", variant firmware, or at least the modem, to comply with your networks bands. See the http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-.../588852-modems-dummies-guide.html#post4711417 for more information on that.

For reasons explained earlier, you cannot be sure what the original CSC code was for that phone. It could be any one of 80+ codes.

Your best bet is to download and flash the latest, stock, Jelly Bean, Samsung firmware for the, "T", variant phone on Vodafone Australia...

I9100TDVLSM_I9100TVAULSF_VAU.zip

and then take it from there.

Kind of regretting not buying the Nexus 4 instead.

IMHO, you would be better off getting the Samsung Galaxy S4, i9505, and flashing the Android Google Play firmware to it. Much better than the Nexus 4. ;)

As per #1.2 of post #1, OTA, (Over The Air), updates are very unreliable and you seem to have received a corrupted update. You have 2 choices...

1. Take it to the nearest Samsung Service Point and explain what has happened and ask them to re-flash the update for you.

2. Download and re-flash the update yourself, i9100OJCLS4, using Odin and by following the instructions in #1.7 of post #1.

Hi @ironass I just wanted to say a couple of things.

I have made no secret of the fact that I have after 4 years left Android for iOS and so far enjoying it. I will still come back to these forums to help people and get my android fix!

Secondly I wanted to thank you for all your help and that this guide goes far and beyond to help newbies to find their feet with JB.

I hope to assist troubleshooting people's issues in the near future even tho I have switched to the dark side 😃

Sounds odd but I will always be a droid deep down. I will be part of this fantastic community for as long as I can regardless of the handset I own. These forums are brilliant.

The original zte blade was my first droid and it was here I signed up for the first time before I stumbled on xda. It was here I learned to root my phone and install Japanese Jelly fish Roms from which I learned a lot from ppl just like you.

I even try to help people now even though my depth of knowledge is nowhere near most in here!

ZTO...That is the Brazilian firmware and language pack. I doubt that that is what you wanted.

There is no JB release for CSC code OJP and so you need to be looking at CSC code, OJV, for Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kenya, Afghanistan, Nigeria, U.A.E. and Iraq.

As per #1.7, just enter i9100OJV into the SamMobile search field.

Dear Ironasss. Want to ask if everything is still ok and all updates, websites, softwares and files are working and able to download updating GT-I9100OXXKI2 to Jelly Bean with Odin? My phone as you mentioned YOUR DEVICE DOES NOT SUPPORT SOFTWARE UPGRADING VIA KIES. Thanks

Hello and welcome to Android Forums opiumaz! :)

If you mean are all the websites, links, etc; are working in posts #1, #2 and #3... the answer is, Yes!

The message that you are getting from Kies indicates that your phone has been flashed before, with a different CSC coded firmware. See #1.5 and #1.6. You will need to update manually using the instructions in #1.7.
