7" vs 10" ?

OK. I checked out the iPad mini just a few minutes back. I have two observations - First, about the device. It feels light and well proportioned. Moving around was fluid but no better than what I am already used to on my Nexus 10 (and to a slightly lesser degree on my Surface RT). However, when I asked for a PDF document to be displayed, the font was too small and it involved a fair amount of zooming and readjusting. The screen was nothing to write home about, but then again, I have been spoilt by the high res on the N10 on one side and ClearType on the Surface on the other. The second observation is that the "geniuses" in the Apple Store (yes, this was my first interaction with them) was poor. At least the guy I was interacting with has a problem with comprehension.

My conclusion is this: If I have to go for a 7-8 inch tablet dedicated to reading, I would probably opt for the N7 (though I should give the Kindle Fire a whirl if I can). Otherwise, I should stick to my N10 or, if I can find it, there was a Lenovo tab (ICS generation), which had a 4:3 aspect ratio - I should look for that!

Gosh! Why can't Android tablet OEMs also manufacture 4:3 aspect ratio tabs? Have people actually given up reading and watch media all the time?????

Yup! I have the first gen Kindle too. But frankly, it is a bit difficult to use nowadays having being thoroughly spoilt by the more recent tabs that I have been using!

Anyways, here is what I have decided to do. First, I want the cheapest solution. Since I have the N10, there is no point in investing in another tab at the moment. Second, how to cut down the weight on my N10? As things stand, my N10 is currently enclosed in a Poetic Slimline cover (it has that auto on/ off function). But that case - slimline though it may be - add both weight and bulk. But without the case, the N10 feels ultra exposed. So, I have now decided to buy one of Google's overpriced covers (I like the red coloured one). That I think will provide some traction to holding the tab (in portrait mode), cover the screen to the extent that it does/ can. And, I am quite sure its weight combined with that of the N10 will be less than what the total weight is with the Poetic cover. Plus, I am assuming with Google's cover, the slimness of the N10 will, for the most part, be maintained. Total weight: 671 gms! Cost to me: 24 quid (plus 9 quid that I spent for the Poetic case, which will now just lie around).

What do you guys think? Better solution? Also, which colour would you recommend? I like the red but that is because ALL my devices are either black or grey. I though a dash of colour would liven things up!!! But I am open to suggestions!

I like the 7" at the telescope. Easier to hold with one hand. But I needed larger storage, so bought the Acer A500 which is 10" What's nice about that, is you have a storage card, and HDMI out and a decent USB that takes regular sized USB. The smaller tablets don't seem to have some of this.

I used to have the A500 - heavy though it was, it was fab! Build quality was not very good, but it was tough though. Thoroughly enjoyed my time using it!!!

Depends on what exact device you would be comparing. I have a Galaxy Tab Plus P6200 running on stock Jellybean ROM by Samsung. For starters, its quite a bit heavier than the iPad mini, a full 33g. Although of course this is an older (2 year old) model, and the more recent versions like the Tab 3 7inch is lighter than the iPad mini.

It does have a slightly crisper screen due to a higher pixel density (170ppi vs 160ppi). The PLS screen on my P6200 is also brighter and has increased viewing angles and better picture quality than the IPS screen on the iPad mini. I have no idea what type of LCD is on the Tab 3 though.

With those in mind, the answer would be, for my specific device, it would probably be the same. The iPad mini is wider and taller, making it more unweildy, but at the same time, my Tab is heavier. So we'll call it a tie in terms of handling. I have a better screen, but it's an inch smaller diagonally than the iPad mini's so again maybe we can call it a tie.

In terms of handling, the bigger bezels on my device lend it to better one handed handling while reading, as your palm covers less of the screen while allowing a secure grip. The thin bezels on the mini makes the grip less secure as you try to keep more of your hand away from the front of the device. So this gives the Tab a slight edge, although this is heavily dependent on one's reading habits, and it may not matter at all.

However, I'd say that the best reading device for this category (7-8inchers) would be the new Nexus 7. The high res screen would simply blow you away, and the letters would be so crisp that reading would be a joy.

True. And, thanks for the detailed reply. However, as I noted in a recent post above, I went to an Apple store to take a look at the Mini. Why the Mini? Aside from the fact that I was briefly considering it, I thought it would also give me an idea about the N7 (can't test the N7 anywhere around where I live). I found that while the letters were indeed crisp (I expect with the 2013 N7 they would be even better), they were too small, which would have required some (I would even say considerable) zooming and scrolling. So, I dropped the idea of a smaller tab entirely. I'll keep hunting for a 4:3 aspect ration 8" or 9" Android tab (the Archos is in my sights). But till then I think I will have to continue using my N10.

You have two???? Thats just greed lol. Send some charity to scotland and youll be forever blessed with good luck.... if not, thee be cursed :p

Well, I have two of which one is being used by my partner! The other one is used by me. But I also have a Surface RT (which my workplace bought for me - I don't have to return it though!!! :D). I use the RT both as a tablet (sometimes) and as an ultralight laptop (very often).

I got my Google-issued cover from the Play Store - I got the red one. It makes a world of difference. I find it easier to handle as compared to when I was using the Poetic Slim Line Case. Much easier to hold and read in portrait mode using one hand. Is the cover over priced? Yes. Could it have been better designed? Maybe - they could have included one fold such that it could have acted as a stand when in landscape mode. That way, it could have been more utilitarian. Oh well! At least, it does what I was looking for.
