Help Ways to get the most charge out of the new nexus 7

I got my nexus 7 and have been loving it to death, but I want to get the most battery out of it. I was using it last night and it went from fully charged to 83% in around an hour. this was just browsing the internet with screen brightness almost all the way off. what gives?
I have widgets: flipboard, google now, google+, and gmail on my home screen.
What are some things to turn off and keep turned off for the most part to fully maximize battery power? I should state that I like being able to use google now, so I guess one of the seemingly two gps options this thing has should be in use.

First of all, welcome to Android Forums!

Second, there could be any number of reasons for your battery to drop 17% in an hour. Google+ and Google Now can use a lot of battery but you need to figure out specifically what is using your battery.

Go to Settings/Battery to see what your top user is. You can click on the different apps to see more specifically what's going on. Top battery using apps can be uninstalled or disabled if not used.

Also worth nothing that if the device is new, it can take anywhere up to 10 days for the battery to perform properly.

You'll probably find that after a couple of weeks, battery life will improve.

As it stands, losing 17% in an hour of constant use isn't actually that bad (especially if you were browsing and using WiFi).

Another thing to keep in mind, the top 10% of the battery isn't the same as the middle 10%. The gauge isn't linear. I know that doesn't seem intuitive, but that's the way it seems to work. Play with it a while and I think you'll see what I mean.

i am a former apple user (just mainly ipad) and i just got really sick of it all. i got really sick of the restrictions and such; so this android stuff is very new to me...and i have to say that i LOVE it.

the top apps are screen and Chrome. I do like Google Chrome since it works well with google+ and Now, and i understand that it can be a battery killer. I used it on my ipad and i dont remember having a huge issue.

my screen is done to 20% brightness. that is sufficient for my needs.

i havent checked the battery much since i am at work, but i came home and it was at 77%. i left and it was at 80%. this was a 5 hour time span.

i did not know that the battery needs to be expelled of all charge and rebooted a few times for it to be calibrated. that is interesting and will definitely do that

update. i went to wifi advanced options and clicked OFF the option that said "scanning always available"

i assume that will do some good for the battery?

Only if you are moving around and passing by various places with different Wi-Fi routers. If you are just at home you should get no effect from that.

I've been using my new Nexus 7 for about 2 1/2 hours straight this afternoon, and just got 83%. So you may see better consumption after a few days. Mine is one week old tomorrow.

I'll chime in with others that suggest as you use it, the battery life will improve. At least that's my experience. My first (2012) Nexus 7 seemed to return very short battery life for the first five cycles or so, then it improved noticeably to the point where I was getting very good battery life.

Recently I bought the new 2013 Nexus 7.2 on the day it was released. After a weeks usage it too began to deliver better battery life.

But I should also mention that I have a habit of fully charging my devices right out of the box before even setting them up. Then I use them during the day and let them charge overnight.

When new I make sure they are down to 15% which is the lowest I will let them run down. After a weeks worth of charge cycles from 15% to full charge, I begin to notice the improvement.
