Help Battery Drain SINCE I started using Wifi Hotspot

Hi guys,

I need your wisdom here because I'm going crazy..

Since a couple of weeks I have noticed a terrible battery drain, like battery being out in 5 hours with absolutely no use, even in Airplane mode :/

I tried everything: new battery, new charger, factory reset, flash OS again, disabling google apps and location services..

It all started I guess since I have used my phone as wifi hotspot. I know during the thethering battery goes out quickly, but it happens also when the phone is not tethering..

I guess I have messed up something with radios, because when I used betterbatterystats I saw ConnectivityService as main wakelock, and using only 2g networks the situazion improves..

Any idea on how to solve this please?? I'm dying..

I have a Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.2.2 and root.

What does your battery use screen show? Post screenshots of the list of % used and also of the graph screen. Also, post what your top partial wake locks are.

Hi Tim, unfortunately I don't have screen to post.. I can tell you what's in there.

First screen with 40-50%, then Phone Idle and Mobile Standby with 20-23% each :/

Mobile signal bar is Always Yellow when using 3G, while if I use only 2G it gets green.

Partial wakelocks that drain battery are ConnectivityService and RILJ.

This is with very basic usage, no sync in background and no app installed!! Statistics taken after flashing the OS.

If I use 2G networks, I can get to 10-11 hours WITHOUT using the phone :/

This is unacceptable..

Should I try flash another Radio? Shouldn't any problem with Radio have been solved by the flash of the OS?

If mobile standby is that high and you've got yellow signal, that's the issue. A weak signal will kill battery as the phone boosts radio power to try to get a better connection
I don't think any radios are going to help you. Only moving, switching phones or changing carriers can help with a weak signal. But I can't explain why this started out of nowhere..... I'm pretty sure of the problem but not the cause or solution.

I have no idea! What if travelling there's something that has gone wrong with the settings?

I'm in London under T-mobile which claims to have the best 3g coverage :/

I'm assuming you have the GSM version so I'm not sure.... as I have the CDMA/LTE version. Is your phone displaying 3G on the status bar? Do you have data roaming enabled? What kind of signal strength and connection type are you getting (settings>about>status)?

If you can read off the statistics then you can provide the screenshots. Screenshot feature is built in to stock Android. Please provide the screenshots, and include screen on time.

Hi, sorry if I haven't replied before..

For those who are in my situation, I want to share my experience: I have gone into the phone settings hidden menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and I have set the Radio to EUROPE and since then the problem I had with the "ConnectivityService" wakelock has gone away!!

But I feel like the battery is not great yet.. What is the normal consumption for these phones? Selecting only 2g networks and having absolutely NOTHING working in background and syncing (except Whatsapp), I get to 14 hours of battery life with 40 minutes of Screen on in which I just text :/

No strange wakelocks, the battery consumptions is Screen 30% and Phone Idle 30%.. Is this normal?! :/

If I use it as a normal user would, I get to 7 hours of battery.. (which is new, just bought)

Promise to post screenshots next week!

12-14hrs with an hour of screen time seems about right on a 3G or 4G network if you were using some Wifi and minimized the amount of syncing/streaming. If you are 100% mobile network your battery life will be significantly less, especially if you are using the phone actively. Also, screen brightness is a huge factor. Set it as low as you can tolerate and bump it up as needed. I suggest using a power control widget that allows you to change the brightness on the fly.
