Android is an Applciation based operating system. Think of it like a PC, only you're installing applications instead of programs. All your applications are located in your app drawer. This is should look something like this

To add and installe new apps you will visit the Play Store, which looks like this:
To place phone calls, tap on the phone icon. The text icon should look like a rectangle with a little face in it.
There is a lot that you can do with your new Smart Phone. I suggest joining Android Forums by registering here and finding your phone's specific make and model in the forum list. There are plenty of people who will be able to answer your questions there.
